So this morning has been a debacle. I had a first appointment with a doula...A consult to see if I wanted to hire her. Today is my day off, but I had to get myself ready, get DS ready, fed and off to daycare (in the opposite direction from where I was going) and drive 45 minutes to the appointment. When I first made the appointment, I had thought from her website she was a lot closer, but when I mapquested it, it was further than I thought...which was a bit of a bummer. But I already had the appointment and she was my top choice.
Well, DS was up half the night so I was exhausted and I had horrible diarrhea. Because I was trying to get away and kept having to run to the bathroom, DH had to get DS ready which resulted in him running late, too...which is horrible for him and will make his day more difficult as a doctor. I finally get out the door, drop DS off at daycare, drive 30+ minutes in traffic and am only 5-10 minutes from her office when I notice I have a missed call. The doula had called about 10 minutes earlier and said she was in a birth and she thought it was going to wrap up before our appointment, but now it wasn't. Ugh!!!! I had such a stressful morning for nothing.
Also, it annoys me a little that she waited until the very last minute to cancel. If the woman had just gone into labor, I would have gotten that, but it seems like to me she could have at least given me a heads up that she might not make the appointment. Women are in labor awhile. Now I am wondering if between the distance and this if I should cross her off my list...or should I just say, "Eh. It is what it is. It comes with being a doula." Thoughts?
I really do "get" that births aren't planned so I usually am one to cut someone a lot of slack...I am not a ftm. But it also takes 5 seconds to send a text and it is not like a doula is the one actually physically delivering the baby like an OB is.

I will probably deliver at Texas Children's in the med center. It actually only takes me about 35 minutes to get there because I can take the hot lane. Her website said she was in North Houston, but really she is more in West Houston.

Plus, her tone just seemed flippant in her message.

At first I thought nope I would cross her off the list, but then I thought maybe she was so caught up in supporting the woman in labor she totally lost track of what was going on. I would maybe give her one more chance, if she does something else that makes you feel like this I would say for sure skip her.
I don't begrudge the lady canceling. I just think it could have been done with more notice or a heads up of the possibility.
