Little girl haircuts - when?

Just curious when folks started cutting their little girl's hair.

DD turned 2 in September, and has always had a lot of hair.  It's past her shoulders now, and I love it, even as sloppy as it often looks pulled into a messy pony.  I have no intention of cutting it anytime soon, but sometimes . . .   I don't know, she still has that baby-uneven mess going on and sometimes I see little girls her age with cute bangs and everything, and I'm not as sure.  So I'm curious about when you decided to start cutting their hair and why you finally made the decision.

Re: Little girl haircuts - when?

  • At 3yrs, 8mo, we still haven't.  She has tight ringlets, so her mid-back length hair really hangs at the base of her neck once dry.  It's not "neat" and could use a trim, but doesn't *need* one.  Maybe in a few years. :)

DD is nearly three and has only had two hair cuts. She had the first around 15 months and just had the second before thanksgiving.

The first time her hair was growing very uneven; the second it was long and had split ends.

  • DD got her first haircut at 20 mos.  Her hair was past her shoulders at the time and curly at the ends.  I just wanted a trim to even out the ends but was so nervous to lose the curly.  Good news is that the curly did not go away but it was evened out and easier to care for.  Just like I need a trim every few months for split ends and whatnot so does she.
  • I can't count the number of haircuts my DD has had (almost 4!).  Her hair grows ridiculously fast but is super thin and stringy.  I tried keeping it long but it just didn't look good.  It's now cut right at her shoulders and looks cute.  Whatever works for you!

  • DD had her first haircut at 2 1/2 because her hair was uneven. She has had two or three since then. I cut it when it starts getting difficult to keep it looking nice.

  • I think DD had her first haircut right around 2. I trimmed it myself, because the back was looking kind of scraggily. We never cut bangs for her, just pulled them back in a little ponytail to keep them out of her eyes.

  • First hair cut around 18 months, I just trimmed the back because it was all different lengths and looked bad. I did not want to cut bangs, but her hair is very thin and wouldn't stay back out of her eyes no matter what I did. So around 2 I cut her bangs. Once a month I trim up her bangs, but I haven't touched the length since that first cut. It's probably 4 inches past her shoulder.

  • I think I cut her hair at about a year and then every five ish months or so after that?
I have a kid that just looks better with trimmed hair. She hates hair accessories and I can't stand hair in her face. It also gets really stringy, tangle-y and straggle-y in the back fast.

I'm also a slacker and like low maintenance. :)

She has fine hair but a lot of it just like I do. My hair needs to be trimmed often or it does the same thing fast.

  • Both of my girls were born with a full head of hair, by 9 months they both had hair in their face all the time. My oldest HATES to have her hair pulled back. She would scream bloody murder whenever I did it. So just before she was 1 I had her hair cut. My hair stylist did it for me. She cut cute bangs and evened the rest out. I had DD2s hair cut around the same age and had my stylist do the same thing. Now we have their hair trimmed every few months (basically when the bangs start to hang in their eyes). DD2s hair is still past her shoulders. She wears pig tails and pony tails a lot and looks just like Boo from Monster's Inc. DD1 asked me if she could cut her hair shorter last fall, so now she has a bob. It's adorable on her.

  • I would only cut if it's uneven or if you want to introduce bangs.  My 3 year old has hair half-way down her back and I love it.  Yes, it's annoying to braid it or otherwise fix it every day but I think I would still need to fix it every day even if it was shorter.

  • My mom trims DD's hair every time she goes over there (about 1x a month?) since she was around a year or so. She kind of naturally had bangs so my mom trims it to keep it out of her eyes.

  • DD2 has a ton of hair, so I had to even it out the first time when she was about 9 months old.  I gave her bangs when she turned one, and I kept up with the bangs for another year, but she wanted to grow them out, so that's where we are now.  I pull the bangs back out of her face, but the back of her hair is really long (and beautiful so I don't plan to cut it for a while :) .

My DD was born with a full head of hair. I think we first trimmed it at around 8 months because it was in her eyes all the time. She has had at least one more full hair cut since then and we have trimmed her bangs a whenever they get in her eyes. Even with all her cuts, her hair is half way down her back. She is actually due for another trim...her hair is getting all uneven in the back and needs the dead ends trimmed again.

  • DD had her first trim at around 2. Then another trim around 3. She just had another trim a few weeks back. We haven't done a "style". We're trying to grow it long and the trims help keep it healthy.

  • DD hates her hair pulled back. It started getting in her eyes so much, I cut it around 20 months and again around 23 months. Mostly a trim adn bangs. She also had a "mullet" so I wanted that fixed :)
  • DD is 2.5 and we haven't cut her hair yet. Her hair is a little more than halfway down her back. She has a few curls on the bottom that I'm afraid won't come back if I cut it. It's pretty even, so I don't see a need to cut it.

  • DD just had her first cut a few weeks ago. It was to her shoulder blades and scraggly looking. She doesn't like anything in her hair so to keep her looking neat, I had it cut to just above her shoulders and added bangs. I was afraid of regretting it, but she looks adorable and I'm happy we did it. It's also much easier to care for.

  • Just cut my 3 year old hair a few weeks ago. Her baby curls were always a knotted mess.
