Starting OPKs

Alright ladies, today should be my last day of my period, so I think I should start OPKs tomorrow, right? I want to make sure I have this straight: I should use them twice a day, about 10-12 hours apart and it shouldn't be the first pee of the day, right?

Anything else I should know?

Re: Starting OPKs

  • What kind are you using?

I always "backup" a positive with a digital but that's me being paranoid.

Also, remember (this is so stupid but it took forever for me to wrap my head around it) You O 24-36 hours AFTER the positive. I would see the positive and think "omg I have to have sex right now!"

You can gear up to O and release an LH surge and not O so sometimes it helps to temp but if you don't temp at least watch CM. If I have "egg white" CM I don't care what the OPKs say HAVE SEX as it is the Mac daddy of CM :)

  • I always get my dark positives around 2 or 3 pm. Once in an endocrinology class, the instructor was adamant that the LH surge happens between 4 and 6 AM. I could never find any info to back that up, but I figure if it's true, the LH should be in your system and in the pee by early afternoon! :) Good luck!
  • The first month I did them everyday 24 hours with FMU from CD 10-20 then I did 2 a day in the same time frame. Good luck!!!

  • I think they are all differant mine said to do it in the afternoon and I though I had a positive two days ago but the it was positive yesterday and I knew it wasn't really the day before just close.  I find it hard to tell if it really is the same color or darker not like a HPT when if it's a line its a line.

Told IVF is the only option and have not found a clinic that will take me.

  • I grabbed Clearblue at Walmart yesterday. It came with 20 sticks an as per the instructions it says to start on CD 6 and test once a day, at the same time each day.

I think since this is the first time I am really charting, I am not going to do the hardcore twice-a-day route. A pregnancy would be nice, but right now I just want to figure out what my body wants to do.

What should you take away from this post? Expect a million more rookie questions from me, hahaha

  • Ok, here is another rookie question:

ok, so I took Provera for the full 10 days and three days later started my bleed on January 8.  On January 9 I started tracking my temps, and I've been pretty steady between 96.83- 96.87.  Today was my first day not bleeding, and my temp spiked up to 97.07.  I even took it three times to confirm it was correct.

Is it normal to spike up .24* like that?  From everything I've been reading, you usually spike AFTER you ovulate, right?  I couldn't have ovulated while bleeding, right?
  • I am no expert...but have been charting for about 1.5years now and in my experience it is normal to experience both pre-O and post-O fluctuation.  I would say that the .24 definitely falls into the category of general day to day fluctuation.  In order for it to be a "temp spike" I think they say it has to be .4 or .5 degrees above your cover line.  The cover line is a horizontal line that basically signifies your average pre-O temp.  No worries about the questions-I felt like the learning curve of charting was steep!
Also, anyone feel free to correct me if you disagree!
  • I'm not saying I disagree-- I've only been doing this for about a week now-- but I read that an ovulation spike was anywhere between .2-.4.

This exactly @amerbutt when you O the temp should be an umistakable jump.
