Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Weight gain while breastfeeding???

I am feeling really discouraged because I have actually gained weight while breastfeeding. I lost 15 pounds initially, but I have gained it all back since I have been actively trying to lose weight. I have been tracking my calories and have a goal of 1670 calories that I almost always keep or am at least close too. I also walk but nothing seems to be helping. I am almost back to my weight the date I delivered my daughter 6 months ago. Any one else struggling? Any fresh ideas?

Re: Weight gain while breastfeeding???

  • I didn't start losing weight until I stopped breast feeding.  It wasn't a magic-melt-the-baby-fat-off bullet for me the way it appears to be for others.

I'd try to add in some resistance training and make sure you're walking at a really brisk pace or consider getting fitted for a pair of running shoes and starting to run or do a walk/run interval.  I do WW and am 7 months postpartum and have only three more pounds to go before I'm back at my pre-baby weight.  I've lost weight before, but for whatever reason baby weight for me was extremely difficult to lose.

  • As a disclaimer, I did not mean to say that you should stop breastfeeding to lose weight, nor that the reason I stopped breast feeding was to lose weight.  I stopped because I had an extremely low supply.  For some of us, the baby weight is just slower to come off than others, despite our best efforts.  It will come off eventually, just be patient with yourself and enjoy your baby!
  • I find that I don't lose everything until I stop breastfeeding although I do lose a lot after 6-9 months. I still nursed my sons until around 2 and I won't stop this time until after 1 if all goes right, I just accept that for me I probably won't lose everything for a long time. I don't restrict calories while breastfeeding because I would be afraid of hurting the supply. I was told if I wanted to lose weight I should go really slowly. This may be different for others.

I agree with PP, just eat well, enjoy your baby and it will come off.
  • You probably are actually eating too few calories, signaling your body to hold on the weight so it can produce milk. I have success with just sticking to meat, veggies, nuts , and fruit. Nothing processed. Sorry you are struggling. Good luck.
  • Be careful with that number of calories. You need closer to 2,000 for nursing. When we were pregnant we needed an extra 300 calories a day with nursing, it's an extra 500 calories. To me, I think your body is in starvation mode. I don't lose weight quickly when breast feeding. I lose it when I'm done.

  • I'm having trouble dropping the weight while BFing as well. A woman at my breastfeeding support group suggested sticking more with weight training, or pilates as opposed to heavy cardio while breastfeeding. I'm going to give that a try and see if I get results that way.

  • I have the same problem. I dropped 15 pounds the first couple of weeks but now this last ten is just sticking around. Im afraid to diet or really exercise hard bc I already have low supply and don't want to mess with that....so not sure what to do.

  • I'm in the same boat as you. Dropped 15lbs after we got home from the hospital. However I haven since then gained 10lbs back. So frigging frustrating.

I joined ww and did their simple start program and gained more. I have started tracking my points and am eating more then when I was during the simple start, and the weight is coming off.

Definitely try eating a few more calories of clean food, drink a crap load of water, and try resistance training. It'll come off slowly. But remember, it took nine months to put on.

    Good luck!!
