Bras?

This may sound a little ridiculous but I'm 24 weeks with twins right now and finding a good fitting bra is my biggest concern.  I was a 36D before getting pregnant and am closer to a 38/40 DDD now.  I am uncomfortable all the time with how big they are.  I feel like I'm getting to the point where my breasts fold into my belly and it's not pleasant.  Does anyone have bra suggestions or advice?  I bought a non wireless bra yesterday b/c I felt like I was almost bruising where the underwire was hitting my belly but that doesn't seem to be making much of a difference today.  I have a nursing bra but the straps don't seem to get short enough to hold my breasts off my belly.  So, any suggestions on bras?  I'm willing to spend anything but I imagine they'll keep getting bigger especially since I want to nurse.  This is literally the part of pregnancy that's making me most miserable as crazy as it sounds!  Did anyone else feel this way?  I've always disliked my large breasts and pregnancy is certainly not helping!

Re: Bras?

  • Where do you live? If you're anywhere in the Chicagoland area, go to Tina's Closet in Lisle! Now! It is SO worth it. I was a 36H with my first daughter, and they carry all those fun sizes in stock every day. I believe they said they carry all the way up to P cups. (In both regular and nursing bras). They're closed one day a week, and I can't remember off the top of my head which day it is, but you can look it up online. Only thing is for your first visit, if you don't buy something, there's a fitting fee... and expect to spend somewhere around $60 per bra. But I've felt your pain, and, like you, I don't care, as long as it makes the pain stop. They don't take appointments either.

If you're in the Milwaukee area, you can try Allure Fits. They won't have your size in stock, and they were a bit rude to me, but they'll measure you properly so you'll know what size to look for. They can order bras in the harder-to-find sizes for you. I'm not sure what kind of nursing bras they have though.

I have had issues with other places (Destination Maternity, cough cough) measuring me and lieing to me about my size because they don't carry my size and just want to sell me something. This angers and annoys me. I'm spilling out. It obviously does not fit. Just tell me that.

If all else fails, find a good friend and have them measure you and hold your breath and order online. I've had better luck with this than going to those other fibbing (choice words) stores. Either way, I'd do this before going bra shopping again so you have a better idea if they're telling you the correct size.

Definitely chose wireless for nursing! My nursing bras were Anita and Goddess. My Goddess (I could've run a marathon in that thing and my boobs would not have felt it... if I was in good enough shape to run a marathon) was my favorite but it was the Anita that actually had some (gasp) cute ones in my size.

Just from your description, it sounds like your band size may be too big. It should fit snugly around under the shoulder area/fatty part of your back. I'm bad at describing that. I had some of the same issues before finding good places to get fitted. That probably means you'll have to go up to an even bigger cup size, but it's worth it!

    Good Luck!

  • I've gone from a 32H to a 34I during this pregnancy. I've been buying my bras at www.figleaves.com for a few years now, and have never been disappointed! I've browsed nursing bras, and I should still be in good shape. They're a British company, so the sizing is a bit different, but they keep their US to UK conversion chart up to date and definitely run true to size.

I'd say get a professional fitting somewhere. Even somewhere like a Lane Bryant, a specialty shop, or a wedding shop should be able to properly get you fitted. I have been told that band size can go back down after the babies are born, so I plan to order my normal band size, a 32, and I bought bra extenders at JoAnns over the weekend.
  • Thank you so much!  I so hate having to deal with this right now!  I'll try having my mom (a former seamstress) measure me and order online and then move on to going to a store.  Will I grow much once the babies are here?  THat's what is making me hesitate to buy now.
  • You can definitely grow more after babies come when your milk comes in. I had that experience with my singleton. I started as a 34B, then was a 34/36 C/D by the end of pregnancy. When my milk came in I ended at a 34F. I had good luck with a Bravado bra that I got from a specialty baby store. I'm already wearing that bra now at 32 weeks with the twins so I'm curious to see if they get bigger after babies come this time.

  • You will still get bigger, but do you want to be stuck like this until the babies come? I'd buy just one or maybe two now and wear it to death. Then order a few after you deliver and know what size you need for nursing. You'll feel so much better! Somewhere online, there's a chart with when to expect your "growth spurts.". I'll see if I can find it for you.
  • Thanks so much and you're totally right.  I don't want to go 14 more weeks (fingers crossed on making it to 38 weeks!) feeling this way.  Thanks for the dose of reality.  I'd love the chart if you find it though.
  • I looked around for the chart I saw before and in doing so found out it's a lot more of an "everyone is different" kind of thing. I know that's no help at all. Sorry :\">
