Bending over with bump

(NO THIS IS NOT A SEX POLL!)

Just in case someone hasn't figured this out yet, if you need to bend over to pick something up, it is much easier and less painful if you lift your back leg up behind you while you lean over. I always feel like I found a pregnancy loophole when I do this (a thousand times a day picking up after my 2 year old). Also, you can pretend to be a gymnast or a ballerina. Your choice.

  • Yeah, my Bradley instructor recommended squatting rather than bending.

  • Oh yes, the "Goddess squat." I remember that move from prenatal yoga with my first! Our prenatal teacher used to make us hold that move for SO LONG.

@biggerinreallife I love going on the bump on my real computer rather than my phone just so I can look into Westley's eyes when you comment on something.

I think if I tried to bend over with one foot off the ground I would land on my face.  I envy your balance, @homediva!
  • i always look like this when i'm picking up toys...  don't know about all you chumps...

I pretty much just do a squat if I have to pick something up. My back won't let me bend over.

That's what I'm supposed to be doing....preparing for birth or something.

And it's just proper body mechanics :)

  • I find myself having to hold my breath when crunching in half to try and pull any pair of boots on. I feel pathetic haha
  • J&NL, I do that too, but then I feel like I'm 90 years old because I can't get back up!

  • I do the ballerina kick thing when bending over. If i squat i just end up sitting down, lol
  • Any of you have tips for reaching down to the bottom of moving boxes with bump in the way? I get halfway through the box and I can't reach the darn bottom. They are the taller dish pack style boxes that come up past my waist (I'm 5'8"). In order to get my kitchen unpacked this century I'm going to have to come up with something...and standing on a little stool and bending over into the box was a bad call. DH laughed his butt of watching me then had to rescue me.

  • One of these days I'm going to bend over and just fall down. I'm trying to squat instead...hopefully I don't get stuck in that position ;)

I can think of one solution .... DH unpack, you sit and watch. Problem solved :-)
Yeah, with only one person unpacking the boxes it is very slow going and I'd like to find my silverware and plates some time this year! Right now I do the top and my husband does the bottom of the boxes. He's really not happy about all the unpacking and keeps finding other things that "need to be done" instead, leaving me with the "easier" job of unpacking boxes.

anyone else with a top load washing machine?? I feel like I do a side-dive over the thing to get all of our clothes out... I see laundry becoming one of DH's duties in the near future!!
Me!! It takes me a few tries to get everything out.

  • Honestly, if I can, I try and pick it up with my toes! If I can't, then I ponder how much it really needs to be picked up.
  • I wish this was a sex poll, because I can do that bending just fine. But if I have to get up from a squat, I just focus on doing so without letting out a fart. If I can just achieve doing ANYTHING without farting I'm good.

  • I squat but I've found I have to do a sumo squat (wide stance) to comfortably accommodate my bump.

this skill will NOT go unused when you are a mom of a newborn!!  my feet became a second set of hands while i would walk around the house holding/rocking/bouncing him...  this was before i discovered the magic of just wrapping him on my chest wherever i went :)
  • mrscrcalli, just happened to notice that your due date is the same as mine!  (Well, my original due date... it has since been adjusted to April 12th.)  Also, your comment made me laugh out loud.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like a 90-year-old grandma when I'm trying to put shoes on... last night, my belly was so uncomfortable that I made my SO take my shoes off for me.  I felt like an invalid x_x.

  • I definitely have to squat. Even then, if it is a ton of toys I end up on my hands and knees to put them all away. I work in a kids center and pick up after 20 or so under 5 years old kiddos all day. Picking up toys is my life.
  • i am getting there i can bend over but i feel like it sucks all the air out of me!

  • I have to do something like a half "sumo-squat" and bending over, i.e. I spread my legs to accommodate the bump and then bend over.  I can't squat very much thanks to my stupid knees, and I feel as if I'm like Atlas trying to lift the world on my shoulders when I attempt to stand back up again.

In the same vein, I can no longer push myself to my feet from a sitting position on the floor.  I have to flip over to hands and knees and then get up. =/

  • I was not prepared for the hilarity in this post.

I have to take a wide stance to do everything, including sit down because my bump is so low that even at the angle of a chair, my legs & my bump try to occupy the same space.

This means I sit on the floor in a straddle, which dd takes as an invitation to sit on my lap. Sweet, but she has bad aim and often sits on my belly before sliding to the floor
