We have a staircase in our house and I'm trying to teach LO to go down backwards on her stomach. She's great at going up but hasn't yet figured out how to go down. It's a work in progress
Yep, they go down backwards and do great for the most part. Kind of scary when one decides to go back up while the other is continuing down. It's hard to spot two when they go opposite directions!
we have a single story, but in my mom's trailer she did that on the 3 mini steps inside to the bedroom. i swear you turn away for one second...
DD stood up right at the top of the steps and fell backwards and rolled head over feet down the 5 very padded steps. She did like 2 complete rotations. She wasn't hurt but just startled. I was standing at the top and wasn't able to reach her when she started to fall. It happens.
Yeah, T assesses her approach. If there is someone to hold hands, she'll demand a hand and go forwards, she might use the wall, or she'll turn around and go backwards. She often misjudges the distance, and gets on her tummy miles away and then does this awkward backwards leopard crawl until she gets to the step - pretending that's what she meant to do all along.

We have never gated our stairs, so she learned at a very young age. We always teach them down before up. She started by going down backward on her belly. Now she likes to hold onto the rail and walk down the stairs. This makes me nervous, but she is good at it.
I have never let him try going down on his own. He will hold my fingers and walk down or he will hold my hand and I will sit next to him and we will go down together on our butts.
Much to my chagrin, it's one of Henry's favorite things to do -- He loves it and acts like he's getting away with murder every time he manages to make it up a few stairs. He's getting pretty good at crawling up and down and seems to find it entertaining enough to do over and over again.
Going up, he crawls like normal; and coming down, he basically crawls backwards on his belly.
