Words/talking

I feel like DS is behind other babies. He will be 1 this weekend and he says mama, more (sounds a lot like mama but I understand him), dada (on rare occasions, like maybe once every 2 weeks) and boom boom (boob when he wants to nurse lol). That is it. He also has zero interest in walking.

Re: Words/talking

  • My Benjamin says.....nothing.....as in no real words. No mama, no dada, nothing! He will be one on the 27th. He just started to take a few steps Saturday, but it came out of nowhere. He makes a lot of sounds and talks a lot and answers when I ask questions but no real words. I'm trying not to worry about it, I'm sure he will start chatting more soon.

  • DS only says Mama ALL the time and dada on occassion. He has finally started to take a few steps, but really has no interest. We have to initiate him to walk and a lot of times he will just flop his legs to not stand! I'm glad we aren't the only ones, because I was getting a little concerned too.

  • dd is almost 13 months and all she really says is daddy, mickey, ba (for bottle, or food really) and moh (which i'm sure means more, bc she'll point to something and say it like she wants more)...dh swears she's saying ma but she's not...
she's been walking since almost 10 months...every baby is different....don't rush the walking...trust me...i wish she was still, well, still....

  • Don't worry about it. Boys are sometimes later with words.  DS didn't talk until closer to 2 and didn't walk until 15 months.  DD isn't walking yet, but she has a few words.

  • My two girls walked much earlier (9 months and 11 months) and definitely talked more too. I know every baby is different and I just worry :). Why...because I am mom lol.

  • DD doesn't talk much either. She says mama, dada, hey, bye, duck, dog, and blah (blame dh for this one). We continue to point out things and tell her what they are, but I'm not too worried yet. I don't want to put too much pressure on it. I wouldn't worry at this point, all babies learn at different paces!

  • I can understand the worry but I think Benjamin is perfectly normal. DS chatters and says several words but has barely taken but maybe 3-4 steps on a handful of occasions. Every baby is different. Looks like his 12 month wellness check up might be coming up soon. It's always good to discuss with your doctor.

  • They all catch up eventually. I wouldnt worry for another 6 months. I think it's more important that they start recognizing words, not necessarily saying them. Like if I tell DD to find a book, she goes and brings me a book. Or points to her toes when I say toes.

  • DD says Mama (actually Mum), Dada (Ada) and that (dat).  At her 1 year well check her pedi was very happy with that.  At this age, they would like to see 1-3 words.

At 6 months DD was crawling, pulling up and cruising on furniture but she still has no interest in walking.  There is no concern for a kid who is not walking at this point.

It is so hard not to compare your child to others but the sooner you stop comparing, the less stressed/worried you will be.  All kids learn at their own pace and unless your pediatrician shows a cause for concern, there is no reason to worry about it.

  • DD doesn't have tons of words  (mainly dada and dog) but she "chats" a lot. From what I've read that's totally normal at this age.

I am getting impatient for her to walk as well. She can stand unassisted but only for a few seconds and then gets scared. But everyone tells me to be in no hurry for her to walk. But she's 24 lbs and lugging her around is KILLING my arms and back so I'm in a little hurry, lol.

  • DS says dada, however, everything is dada.  LOL.  He definitely calls DH dada, but then will point to the dog and say dada, or a toy and say dada.  He has said mama in the past, but has never called me mama.  He does say dat (that) as he is pointing at things.  Recently I have been really listening to him and he does make sounds that are starting to resemble words.  I try to reinforce the words when I hear something that could be a word.

As for walking, DS has been walking for the past 2 months.  One of my sisters has a DD who is 5 months older that DS and the other sister has a DD that is 3 months older that DS (yes, my parents added 3 grandkids in 5 months).  It is very interesting to see the 3 of them learning new skills and there really is no predicting who will do something first.  They each progress at their own rate.

  • LO says dada, that, ba (not sure what this is but she points at everything and says ba) and her favorite word is no. I have no clue where she learned this but it is so clear what she is saying.

My parents added 3 grand kids in 9 months! It's sooo awesome having my sisters in this with me :) even though this LO is each of their 3rd.
  • My dd doesn't talk much. Sometimes dada, once in a blue moon mom. She mostly says gub which I don't think means anything lol. Our pedi said not to worry, that they really start talking around 18 months. What I think is amazing is that she understands a lot when we ask her questions (like where is mommy's nose) so I think we are fine.

  • My ds said no words at this age. Maybe mama. He didn't even say much at all until 2.5ish. I figure, they'll all learn to walk, talk, and eat with a spoon etc. no need to waste time worrying.
