Castor oil induced labor

Has anyone tried castor oil or know anyone who has? I'm 39 weeks and 2 days my due date is Sunday and my husband is in the military and won't be here until the 24 due to some training. I don't have any friends or even close family that lives near me. I have a toddler son that I have no idea who would watch him if I went into labor on my own. I do currently have a friend from my home town visiting for the week (until the 20th) I'm so desperate to have my baby, while I have the help this week. I'm debating on taking castor oil can anyone give me some insight to personal experiences or other stories from friends? Please and thank you ladies

    I have never tried it... I suppose IF your body was ready that the uncontrollable shits might lead to contractions thus leading to labor in theory?? But ultimately baby is gonna come when baby wants to come.

    This. My mom did it after her water broke but contractions didn't. Sure enough she got them---just after she had the uncontrollable shits.

    The L&D nurse who gave our childbirth class last weekend, and the two doulas who were helping her, specifically said NOT to do this.

    This is a method of induction. But it shouldn't be done without tr guidance of a medical provider. Yes it gives you terrible diarrhea and if your body is ready can induce labor. It's not a guarantee. It is quite an unpleasant experience to say the least. It can severally dihydrate you so again I would not attempt it. It's more of a last resort natural induction. My birth center does it but only if mama is nearing 42 weeks and trying to void a hospital induction. I've seen it not work

    As everyone said, it gives you the shits. What hasn't been mentioned is that, since baby ingests everything you do, it can also give your baby the shits. This means that he could end up swallowing/inhaling meconium, which is a MAJOR problem. Figure out child care for your kid and wait it out.

    My husband's step mom works at the L&D at our hospital and she said that they get several women coming in because they take caster oil and not only does it give then terribly diarrhea, but it can also give you the worst stomach cramps you've ever had. Many girls go in crying because of how painful the cramping is...

    I have only heard awful things about taking castor oil, for labor or anything else.  As others have stated, it's better for your baby to come out on his/her timeframe than to do anything to try to speed it up, for any reason.  I understand the concern about child care for your current toddler - we live somewhere without any family around and are having to come up with a contingency plan for who will stay with our LO if this baby comes more than a few days early.  It won't be ideal, but it will be OK.  Maybe your friend can stay a few extra days until your husband returns?  Any other family member on either side that might be able to bridge the gap until the 24th?  Good luck.
