Really Nervous about my a/s tomorrow

So tomorrow I have my a/s and
i also turn 19 weeks. I know the ultrasound techs arent legally supposed to tell you and I'm hoping i'll get a nice one and they will. But what was your ladies a/s' like? Were they rude? Did they refuse to tell you? Did they let your SO come in with you? I'm just more then a little spooked about the whole process and I really have no idea whats going to happen. I had one ultrasound when i was around 6 weeks to date the due date properly but I know this one will be different. Im just super nervous >.<

Don't stress!!!! It's a very lengthy ultrasound and very different than your prior ultrasound. If the tech isn't saying anything, ask questions! If they don't bring up the sex, then you are more than free to ask. At this point the tech could accurately tell the sex if the baby cooperates. Don't worry! They let my DH come in and also DS.
For DS at the very end the tech asked us whether we wanted to know the sex. But if for some reason your tech doesn't just ask them! Everything will be fine :)

ETA: we're you asking if the tech will tell you the baby is a boy or girl? Just reread and realized you never said that specifically... But this ultrasound is not just to find out the gender, FYI!
  • I had my DD's a/s at a teaching hospital, and the doctor was training a tech, so we got to hear everything. This time around, my husband works at the hospital (as a researcher, not actually in medicine), but that was apparently enough that the tech was happy to point out where the different parts of the brain were and how they looked different from other parts, and then she just told us when she was measuring different body parts. Later a doctor came in (my heart almost stopped when she said she had to get a doctor, but that it was standard at this practice), and she explained everything in detail, like how they look for the four chambers of the heart to make sure everything is working right, and that they look for fluid in the stomach because it means the baby is able to swallow (no obstructions) and is "digesting" the amniotic fluid, and lots of other things like that.

My husband and my two-year-old DD came in with me, and no one batted an eye. I was nervous too, but for me, once I saw the heart beat, I was relieved, and then once he started moving around, it was just fun.
  • I also have my AS tomorrow and will turn 19 weeks! Due date twins!

My NT scan had a really nice, friendly tech and H sat in a chair beside me. It was kind is awesome. I just relaxed and watched the little one wiggle.

  • We had ours today and the tech just would tell us what she was looking at (parts of the brain, kidneys, heart, etc.) and what measurements she needed to find. We already knew the genders but she did take pictures and give them to us. She was really nice and I just made small talk with her, I never asked her if something was not right since I knew she couldn't answer that. We were at a specialist because it is twins and the doctor comes in right after her and reviews everything and did a quick scan himself.

  • I have mine tomorrow as well.  I'll probably have the same woman who did my scan with C.  DH was more than welcome to come in.  I agree with PP, she let me know what she was measuring, showed us all the parts, and then asked if we wanted to know the sex or not (yes!).  We didn't ask specifically if anything was right or wrong, but she never gave us a reason to want to.  If you are nervous, tell your tech that!  It's ok to be nervous and she/he might be more forthcoming with information or small talk if they know you are nervous (obviously not diagnosis info, but what they're doing and why, etc).  GL!

  • Not sure if this is different by state or by center, but at an A/S appointment, they check everything on baby. Take measurements, and check the sex of the baby. They usually ask if you would like to know the sex before or they just spit it out. So, if you don't want to know you will want to tell the tech at the beginning, if they don't ask. They will give you usually 4 pictures to take home and keep some for your dr./file Your doctor will review the ultrasound pictures, measurements and notes from the tech. From there if there is nothing the dr wants to look into further, then you just show up for your next monthly appt. If they have questions or want to see something again, they will call you to schedule another appointment. My dr said, no news is good news.
For bringing people, you will want to check with that center as each has their own policy. My office will let a max of four people. However, we are just having my DH and DS. We will tell everyone else by a shirt/announcement photo. :). Good luck!!

    I'm confused by your post.
I had my scan on Friday and it took about fifteen minutes. She talked about each part she measured and explained what we were looking at. She was really friendly and I have a DVD of the scan.

  • Most A/S take a bit longer because there are certain measurements they have to get. Mine was done by the regular tech at my OBs office.we got to watch the whole thing on a big screen and she explained everything to us. I told her I was glad they did them this way because with DD they wouldn't let me see the screen, wouldn't let DH in, wouldn't tell me anything. That was at the radiology dept at a hospital as opposed to the office u/s tech.

  • They will measure things and tell you what they are measuring. They will tell you the sex if you want to know (assuming baby cooperates). They will not tell you if they see an issue. After the scan the doctor will come in and he/she may do a quick check and will tell you if there are any issues it that everything looks good! Good luck! :-)

This is one of the best answers. I just had mine on Monday. My tech was super nice. She talked the whole time and told me what she was measuring and explained the use of colors on the screen to look at blood flow. They will tell you the gender if the baby allows them to see it. I think each place is different Where I went, they have doctors on staff, so a doctor reviewed everything and came in to talk to us. He also took a look and asked us if we had any questions. He said it all looked normal. If you don't get to see a doc, they send the report to your OBGYN, who will let you know if there is any concern. Otherwise, you see your OBGYN at your next scheduled apt. Hope that helps. Don't be nervous. (Although I was). It's actually really exciting and neat to see your baby up close as possible, and swimming around in there. Let us know how it goes!!x
  • Yeah i meant the sex. I live in Ontario and some clinics dont let your SO in with you and some of them dont offer pictures and arent legally supposed to tell you the sex of the baby. I've never been to this clinic before so im just really nervous. The last clinic i went to was very rude and judgemental, hence why i changed clinics, and im just scared i'll have to go through that again. Thanks for the nice words ladies.
