Birthday cake?

We want to have a birthday cake for DS for his birthday. I'm afraid I don't have the time to bake one myself. Between work and a whole host of family members descending for the big day, I'm already a bit crazed. If you are or have gotten a cake of some sort for your little one to try on his/her birthday, what did you look for if you did not bake it yourself. Did you make a special request of a bakery - like low sugar, no sugar, etc.? - or did you just get a regular old birthday cake?

Re: Birthday cake?

  • We did regular cake. My aunt does all the cakes for our events, so it was regular recipe white cake with white icing. We did give DD only a cupcake though, not a whole mini cake. She did fine with it. No real sugar crash for her and she seemed to enjoy it.

  • Thank you! Relief setting in that I'm not the only mom who goes for the store bought cake. Not planning on giving him a whole cake to paint the walls with, but store-bought is probably the way I need to go. THANKS!

  • I ended up baking the cake as I caved to peer pressure from my mil, otherwise, I would have gone to whole foods.

  • Ordered a cake from Safeway and gave her a little piece. She ate most of it and stayed pretty clean besides her face. I was impressed. I wasn't too worried about letting her have some sugar one day.

  • I made a cake from a box mix. I thought he was going to smash it all up, but he ended up picking at it with a spoon. I let him eat a little then took it away. He was fine that night. I stressed over it too much. Like everything else! Lol.

  • Regular store bought cake here. We just gave her a piece and she didn't even eat the whole thing. It was fine.

  • We did a regular smash cake from publix and she ate more than I thought she would. She was fine afterwards and like ppl said I'm not afraid of sugar. Her party is Saturday and she will have another cake to smash and eat.

  • DS's birthday celebrations were along with our family Christmas celebrations so I knew I wouldn't have time to bake. So I ordered from a gal who makes cakes for all our family celebrations. No special requests. I did ask her to go thinner on the frosting but I don't think she did. DS didn't eat much of his first smash cake, but must have figured out what to do with his second because we had to actually take the cake away from him he was eating so much. He slept just fine both days and didn't seem to have any stomach issues. It's his birthday, so we figured some sugar was worth it!

  • I'm making a cake but I love to bake and I generally hate store-bought cakes.  I am not changing anything from my normal recipe - but I am going to stick to cream cheese icing and *attempt* to draw a small Elmo with some colored royal icing.

  • Store bought here also. We did a small cake with our parents on his actual birthday and he wasn't too interested in it. His party with our extended family is on Sunday so we'll see if he's more into it then.
