Taking night classes while pregnant....

Hi Ladies, I am in a pickle. I am 32 years old currently 6 weeks pregnant (technically tomorrow I will be 6 weeks), but anyway I am currently enrolled in school (classes are only Mon and Wed.), but enrolled before I knew I was pregnant. Even though I am only enrolled in one class (math) I just don’t want the extra stress of school while being pregnant. Almost 2 years ago I had a m/c halfway through my pregnancy (non-stress related). I already struggle with math as it is. It won’t really make a difference if I take the class now or next year…because I still have other mandatory classes to take before I graduate from college. I just feel stuck because I started the class last night and really wanted to take it. I also wanted to get a glimpse of how it would be and was hoping that I could stick it out for semester. The entire time I was in class I had to pee (the class is an hour and a half long 7 - 8:30 pm), I was thinking about food, and I was tired. Not to mention I work 10 plus hours a day sometimes. I just don’t want to do anything jeopardize my baby’s health. I pretty much know what I am going to do, but just want to see if anybody has ever been in this kind of situation or is currently in this situation now. Looking forward to your comments. Thanks ladies. :)<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Re: Taking night classes while pregnant....

  • I did both pregnant but my professors were all pretty easy going. My undergrad, I had online and in class (and I also was working retail 40hrs/week). My department was pretty small so I knew the professors well. I just explained it to them and they understood.

I did my MBA (just graduated!! WOO HOO!!!) online and was pregnant for a while of it. It was definitely much easier to manage. I didn't have to worry about feeling sick during class or anything. I did my work when I felt well enough to.

Do whatever you think will work best for you. Good luck with school, the decision, and the pregnancy!! :-)

  • I took grad level accounting courses when I was pregnant. It was WAY easier than when I had a 2 - 10 month old infant.

  • It sounds like you already know what you want to do.

I took classes while I was pregnant. It's doable, but I understand your apprehension because of the m/c. Like a PP said, it will certainly be easier now than when you have a newborn!!

  • I'm an Academic Advisor at a college and can tell you from experience that taking 1 class, even if it is something sucky like math will not be in the least bit taxing on you.

If you don't do it now, you're going to come up with a million more reasons you can't/won't finish it after the baby is here.  Trust me, there's always going to be a good reason.

  • I'm working full time and part time and taking two classes. It is definitely stressful, but I agree with Marisa, do it before the baby gets here! Luckily I have an amazing husband who does so much for me. I would never make it without him.

  • I was have the same debate with myself just last week. I decided to continue on with this semester as I planned (3 classes, 1 is online and the other 2 require campus exams). I am hoping to find at least 1 online class to take next semester so I don't back out of school completely. I know a full time job, toddler, and new baby will be quite the handful so I'm not going to push it too much.

Aww, thanks so much!! It was definitely a struggle. But now that it's actually done, I'm so glad that I did it then. The older the girls get (plus adding in the new one) the harder it got.

Don't over do it but keep the end goal in mind. :-)

  • Thank you ladies...everyone sharing their personal experiences of being pregnant and in school has really encouraged me. I really appreciate the wonderful support and advice. It feels good to know that I am not dealing with certain concerns, etc. alone. I look forward to chatting with you ladies in the future as well. :)

when I was pregnant with my daughter, I was enrolled in graduate school full time, & I also work full time as a teacher. it was hard but I'm really glad that I stuck with it because I got my masters degree that much quicker. But if you think it's going to be causing you undue stress I would definitpely give it some time to think about it. Good luck.

  • I'm sure you've already made up your mind, but it will be much easier to take a class pregnant than take a class with a baby. I would stick it out.

If a math class is going to stress you out I would definitely find outlets for your stress, that seems like a minimal stressor. What if you have a real life stress pops up mid pregnancy? You need a way to relieve stress.

I was a full time student as well as working full time for 2 semesters while pregnant, I can tell you from experience that was a lot easier than the one part time semester with a newborn. I would suggest finishing out the semester with the one class.

As far as the having to go pee, I would go, and also bring snacks so that you can focus on the class, rather than how hungry you are.
  • I went back to college when LO was 6 month, and now I am 7 weeks pregnant with #2 and still in school. It is hard, but it is possible. I have no energy whatsoever, I have horrible nausea all.day.long. Yet I am in class from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm two days a week and from 7:10:30 one evening a week. I know all these symptoms will be gone once I'm into my second tri. What I am trying to say is, this is the time to finish school, not later.
