Getting LO to sleep in crib

LO is just about 3 months old; I'm a FTM.  I fear I made the mistake of letting him sleep on me these past few months.  He would not get any sleep any other way... we tried pack and plays, numerous bassinets (flat and angled), swings, co-sleeper bassinets in our bed, everything.  Swaddled and unswaddled.  Eventually I let him sleep on me because it is the only way he would get any rest :( I have two weeks until I go back to work and I'm getting worried about keeping this up.  MIL will also be taking care of him during the day and I worry it's going to be very hard on her if she can't even get him to take a nap or two out of her arms.  Any suggestions on getting him in a crib or similar?

Re: Getting LO to sleep in crib

  • I suggest watching "Happiest Baby on the Block" ... just swaddling alone didn't work for us either. The 5 S's from happiest baby made all the difference. Also, my DS wouldn't sleep flat for a while, have you tried a rock-n-play sleeper?

Do you put your LO down when awake on his/her back just to play when they are happy? It is very easy to sit and hold that first baby a lot. :) We did with our DS 1.

Just remember, this phase won't last forever. GL to you!

  • Also, a white noise machine might help or a mobile in the crib?!

  • We used rock n play up until now ( 10.5 wks ) and tried crib last night since I will be going back to work soon too. It was abysmal!! Even though he was swaddled, he had more freedom with his legs than he did in rock n play and was moving tons, which meant no sleep. We put him in rock n play after 3 hrs and ordered a woombie online- a 1 am purchase that we are going to try !
  • meryan12 let me know how that works for you.  I just ordered Merlins Magic Sleepsuit hoping that'll be my miracle.  I'll keep everyone posted!

  • Will do- arrives tomorrow!
  • I could have written this post exactly. My son was the same way and slept on me for about 10 weeks. I kept trying everything-- swing, pack n play, nap nanny, inclined mattress, etc. and he would not have it. The closest he came to liking anything was swaddled arms in, in the pack n play-- but he would only tolerate that about an hour or two tops and then id give up because I knew I could get 4-6 hours sleep if he just slept on me. Then at about 8 weeks he just got too big to where I wasn't comfortable sleeping with him on my chest anymore. So I started letting him sleep on his back in the hook of my arm beside me. He tolerated that fine, and liked it better each night. Then about that time he started napping in the swing. So I was like, ok awesome, it's just a matter of time before he will sleep at night somewhere else. I really didn't want him sleeping at night in the swing. Preferred crib or pack n play. So about 9ish weeks he started sleeping less soundly and waking up more so I was like I gotta get him out of my bed. So I borrowed a rock n play from a friend and that thing was amazing. Why didn't I borrow it sooner!?? He slept pretty good in that-- 3 hour stretches. So I let him sleep a few nights in that and then I thought, ill try the crib because if he's finally on his back in this rock n play maybe he will sleep on his back in the crib. And so last Friday (10 days ago) I tried the crib, swaddled in sleep sack, arms in. And it worked! And the last 2 nights he slept through the night!

So I tell you all that to say-- I think your LO will do it when he's ready. Mine did and I thought he never would unless I just let him cry it out which I wasn't about to do.
  • What sleep sack? How was he swaddled within it ?

As PP said, the Halo sleepsacks come with or with out wings. If you get the swaddling one with wings then you can swaddle their arms in or out, and It's Velcro so it's a lot harder for them to break out of than a swaddling blanket.
  • Tried it last night ( woombie) and my son thrashed and grunted trying to move around :( trying again tonight
  • Try a rock n play. My LO loved it. Of course, then you just have to transition to a crib, but thats an easier transition and you can wait a month or two before doing that.

Also maybe try getting LO to sleep in a swing?

And swaddled, definitely. Even if LO prefers arms out, which lots of babies do by 3 months.

  • Woombie and swaddle worked!! We tried swaddling differently than the hospital showed us ( watched video " happiest baby on the block" which showed us) and the other way was tighter and more effective. Hooray!
