Toddler eye exam

At my son's check up, they did an eye test and found out there might be something wrong with his right eye. He has an appointment with an eye doctor tomorrow but I'm concerned because their going to have to dilate his eyes. He's only three and I'm afraid he's going to freak out (I probably would if I didn't know what the heck is going on). I don't think he'll understand when we explain it to him. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this? If your children had to have eye exams and how it went? TIA!

Re: Toddler eye exam

  • My 2yr old got a vision test and did fine. But I've had my eyes dilated tons of times and it doesn't hurt one bit. its just an eye drop. GL!

  • My dd has eye issues where she has to be monitored every three months. She hates it and doesn't cooperate at all. The doctor and nurses will be used to that if your son reacts in the same way.

My dd had her eyes dilated at 12 months. I held her down and they did it very quickly. It wasn't a big deal really.
  • My DS had a lazy eye that we started going see about at 9 months.  They dilated his eyes around 12 months and then again before his surgery at a little over 2 years old.  As @gigi8212 said, it wasn't a big deal.

  • My 2.5 year old sees an opthamologist regularly and he thinks she's cool. They're specially trained. They don't even test the way they test our eyes. My pedi claimed Lincoln had an issue, too, and the opthamologist was like, "Uh, stick to eye doctors determining eye problems!"
