3rd Trimester

Excessive weight gain??

At my 37 week apt today I was scolded for my "excessive weight gain". Seems so far I've gained 40 lbs! I was quite surprised at this because I look healthy, mostly all belly, no swelling or water retention. I can feel that my thighs, breasts and butt are bigger and less "in shape" but now I'm so worried about the last 3 weeks and getting all this weight off. Dr says that I should be getting more cardio vascular exercise but I start to get contractions just going for a walk. I feel guilty everytime I eat now. Did any of you have experience with this and have no problems dropping the "excessive" weight post baby?

Re: Excessive weight gain??

  • 40 lbs is not excessive at all. I'm almost 35 weeks and I've gained 34lbs and my doctor is not worried at all. And don't worry about what your eating just eat healthy and remember it's for your baby :) every pregnancy is different and every body is different and gains differently. And hey there are people who gain 70-80lbs and get it off no problem too.

Don't get down on yourself for what you doctors says. And plus you only have 3 weeks to go! Enjoy your last few weeks and don't stress out
  • My best friend gained 47 lbs during her pregnancy and she lost almost all of it within a year of giving birth! She breast fed and took long walks with her baby and she said that really helped her to lose it.  Just keep eating healthy and try not to worry too much :) It's definitely do-able!
  • With my first one I gained over 70 lbs! I am serious. I was back to my pre pregnancy weight 4 months post partum. I actually lost half the weight 2 weeks post partum since it was mostly water, I just didn't realize how much water weight I was retaining until it started falling off. Don't worry, as long as you and baby are healthy that's all that matters. You will lose the weight.
  • Wow!  I would be in major trouble because I am up 37 pounds at my 27 week check-up... I am pregnant with twins but this is alot more than I thought I would be gaining but my midwife didnt say a word to me.

  • I'm 29 weeks and have gained about 30 pounds.  It's way over what the charts recommend, but oh well.  I try to be healthy and get as much exercise as I can, but as of last week I can't really do much in the way of exercise beside swimming (which is REALLY hard to fit into my schedule, so I can't do it as much as I would like).

Now is not the time to take drastic measures with your eating or exercise.  If there are small tweaks you can make, like cutting out dessert every night, then that's fine.  If you're already making healthy choices then I wouldn't worry too much about it.  Some of us gain more than others.

  • I wouldn't stress about this at all. I'm 2 days away from my due date, and I've gained about 70 pounds! Every woman's body is different, so don't let your doctor bully you about your weight, and you certainly shouldn't feel guilty about eating.

  • Yeah, definitely don't worry about it... I was supposed to gain between 15-20, but I've gained 40.

It just happens. I think it's mostly water and stuff towards the end anyways.

  • I think I would cry if that happened! I've put on about 45 but definitely don't look like I've let myself go. My doctors don't seem concerned. I'm not supposed to exercise vigorously and it's just hard to find motivation to go to the gym and just walk, so I'm just trying to watch what I eat and eat at least 1 healthy snack a day. I have full intentions of working it off after. I've heard a lot of women gain the most with their first. Our bodies are trying to figure it all out too!
  • Just let your body do what it needs to do. Some of it may be water at this point and that will cause the number on your scale to fluctuate up and down. It can be kind of significant at this point too! It seriously makes me so stabby when dr's say this kind of thing because it is just one more item to add to the worry list for a woman. To note, I was at least up 40 lbs at 37 weeks with my last pregnancy. I worked out every single day and really ate pretty healthy after my 1st tri. I say at least 40lbs because I had DD at exactly 37 weeks and the last time I weighed myself was 3 days prior. At that point I was up 40. However, in the 3 days that followed I retained a boatload of water and puffed up pretty bad so I'm sure the number was significantly higher on the actual day I had her! Tell your dr you have 3ish weeks left and you have bigger fish to fry than a few pounds!
  • Does anyone else's clinic list their BMI on their paperwork? Mine puts it right on the front page! It's so discouraging to see mine tip over into being "overweight" but I'm also 30 weeks pregnant! :( I'm guessing it's just an automatic part of the software that the clinic uses but it still bothers me to see that :(
  • I am normally like 110 lbs when. to pregnant... Have gained over 40 with both LOs and thus far this pregnancy have gained 30. I dropped all of the weight plus an additional 5-10 lbs with my first two without doing a whole lot- I breasted and got back I to my jogging routine but that was basically it. Don't stress. Your body will bounce back as long as you are eating healthfully and exercising post-baby!

  • I gained 40 with my DD and lost it all about 3 months after birth. Don't worry about it. It comes off!

Thanks guys. This is sort of what I figured but I just kinda wanted to know I wasn't crazy. Most people have actually been telling me how good I look. Obviously you feel as big as a house when you're 37 weeks pregnant but to have a dr look at you and tell you you have now crossed over into the "excessive weight gain" category is upsetting no matter what. Then she's looking at how huge I am and telling me to do cardiovascular workouts?! I gained about 35 with my first an was actually thinner than I've ever been 9 months later. But I just wondered if others had a similar experience and fared ok afterwards! Thank you all for the help and confidence!
  • Im up 47 lbs at 30 weeks... no ones said anything to me.  I gained around 45 lbs with my last pregnancy and delivered at 38 weeks.  I lost it all by 10 months post partum. :D You will be fine.

  • At my 30 week appt I weighed in at 30 lb gain thus far...to add insult to injury 18 pounds were gained in the past 2 months! I almost fell off the scale when I saw I gained 10 lbs in one month! My doctor made it a point to say "most women gain 30 lbs the entire pregnancy." It definitely stung to hear that
  • It cut off my post but was saying my mommy friends have all been able to shed the baby weight so I wouldn't stress about it.
