Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Foods for baby?

What kind of foods (not pureed) are you feeding LO? My DD is 10 months old and I have given her some purees but mostly just breastfeed her. She LOVES finger foods and feeding herself though and I am having a hard time figuring out what is ok to give her.. She seems to choke easily which has scared me away from trying things too.. Right now I give her banana and cheerios which she does well with. TIA!

Re: Foods for baby?

  • My DD#2 is 10 months old as well.  She sometimes chokes but when she has too much or can't handle it she spits it out.

I started finger foods at 8 months and by 9 months we only do finger foods, no more purees.

She has had pears, steamed apples, honeydew mellon, cantaloup, blueberries, kiwi (but allergic), water mellon, bananas
toast strips, baguette, pizza crust, spaghetti plain, cheerios, puffs, mum mum rice crackers
chicken, ground beef, pork, steak, egg yokes
steamed veggies peas, corn , squash, spaghetti squash, green beans, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflour.

We usually feed her what we are having with a little modification...no butter (possible dairy allergy), we also don't use too many spices, or sauces.

  • Is your daughter choking or gagging? Gagging is a normal part of eating solids.

  • I know it's scary but I don't think she's choking.  Choking means no air and no sounds come from them and the food needs to be forcibly removed from their airway.  Gagging sounds scary but is actually a good thing :)  Their gag reflex is a lot closer to the front of their mouth when they're little.  It's nature's little fail safe to make them stop BEFORE they choke.

There's a lot they can have.  Shredded cheeses, shredded meats, toast/breads, cereals, soft fruits and veggies, pancakes...

  • I feed my LO whatever we eat and I have been doing this since about 8 months. She does fine with it.

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • DD gags when she puts too many of anything in her mouth (I swear she's trying to set a record with how many cheerios she can fit in there) so I've limited her to 3 cheerios at a time.  Otherwise I'll break a piece (small of course) off some things I'm eating.  This weekend she had some bread from Panera, an apple slice, a piece of pineapple, chicken, gerber cheese puffs & apple wagon wheels, raw baby carrots, potatoes, a tiny piece of waffle with syrup, and toast with grape jelly.  We usually do purees but if we're at a restaurant or if I made a not-spicy dinner I'll try to give her a taste.
  • Thanks for your responses. I guess she is gagging, not choking. Is it usually better to do long strips of food or tiny bites? Thanks guys! This is really scary to me and I have never had to experience this before..

  • For us we do strips of toast and big pieces of rolls etc. For most everything else I do bite size pieces, about the size of a pea.
I can understand your nervousness. I was nervous when we started with DD#1.

  • I just gave her a strip of bread and she did great!

  • We give him pretty much anything at this point, except for honey. Yesterday we had sausage lentil soup, so he had some of that (mostly lentils with carrots and celery), today we are having tacos so he'll have some shredded chicken, shredded chicken, black beans, etc. As long as it's not a choking hazard and soft enough for them to gum, it's fine. He also just started on the toddler meals at daycare and has been doing great.

Strips are easier for them to hold. You often see people use strips when they are doing baby-led weaning, as babies as young as 6 months really don't have a pincer grasp, yet. as they develop the pincer grasp, though, you can start giving small pieces... and at 10 months I'm sure your child is hard at work on the pincer grasp! So I would say you can do either. Things that are soft and easy to bite off of, maybe do in strips... but you can give small pieces of other foods. If she can pick up cheerios by herself, she should be able to pick up small pieces of other things... and then maybe you won't worry as much about choking :-)
