How to evaluate care provider?

Hi all, new to the board. I just started WFH and am having trouble telling whether my sitter is working out.

I was SAH for the 1st 4 months of DS life and we EBF so we have a very strong bond. So far the sitter has worked with us 3 days and has a lot of trouble getting him calm. It's hard to tell if it's his sleep regression, teething, being separated from me and dealing with a new person or she is just not good at her job. Any tips on how to tell? TIA.

Re: How to evaluate care provider?

  • As someone with two children of my own (and one on the way) as well as having worked in the child care field for 13 years, I will say, it can take as much as a month or more for your child to get adjusted to a new caregiver.  Because this is a one on one situation and not a child care center, it will likely take less time (because you're not dealing with getting adjusted to multiple children and caregivers).  Although separation anxiety is much more prevalent when your child is about one year old, you have formed such a tight bond these first few months that introducing a new person will take a little time.  Good luck!

  • Agreed. I think 3 days is too little a time to determine if the sitter is or is not a good fit. It can take time for bonding to take place, so give it that time.

  • Thanks ladies. LO's sleep issues and my PPD have clouded the issue and I'm just incredibly stressed. Thanks for the clarity.

  • Trust your mom instincts.  If you still have a good feeling about her then I'd give it more time.

  • Definitely give it more time. Does your LO see you or know you're home while you're working? That might be part of the problem. Otherwise, like PPs said, 3 days is a bit early to determine if it's working out if you have generally good feelings about the sitter otherwise.
