BF guilt - is this normal?

Hi all,

Is it normal to be losing my milk supply at 11/12 months old? Or not responding to the pump anymore? I used to pump 7-8 oz in the morning, and about 5 oz at all other sessions. Now I get 1-2 oz per session, and sometimes nothing at all. I know DD won't be drinking as much milk now that she eats solids too, but she still downs a 5 oz bottle of BM twice a day at daycare and would probably drink more if I had it. I really wanted to continue BF until 18 or 24 months, but I'm getting so stressed out about this low output every time I pump that I'm starting to reconsider. Plus I'm now pumping twice as often as I used to, and that just feels wrong with an almost one-year-old.

Re: BF guilt - is this normal?

  • I just stopped pumping and was seeing a decrease leading up to that decision.  Now that DS is one, I started giving him whole organic cow's milk in zippy cup, but still nurse three or so times a day.  He's been off the bottle and only taking zippy cup at meals for a couple months now, so it wasn't as hard a decision to stop pumping and just offer cows milk instead of my milk.

  • Not sure about 11mo, but I saw a major decrease at 10mo.  I couldn't pump enough to leave him a bottle if I needed to go to work or out without him and he never seemed satisfied after nursing.  We ended up introducing formula and gradually phased out nursing.  I hope you find what works for you - whether you want to begin weaning or try to increase your supply.

  • My body just doesn't seem to respond very well to the pump anymore (I only get 1-2 ozs. as well).  I noticed it getting worse around 10 months.    I can get more from hand expression than from a manual or electric pump.  We added in WCM per our pedi's suggestion around 11 months.  It was a huge weight off of me.  I was blowing through my freezer stash really quickly.

When I'm home, DD breastfeeds and gets plenty.  My breasts feel completely empty when she nurses and still partially full when I use the pump.
