Shopping craigslist?

Anyone stalking Craigslist looking for deals? Or has anyone bought from Craigslist? I saw two separate offers of women with 100+ pieces of clothing for baby from 0-18 months (one was nearly 200 outfits), for $75 each. Now, I think thus is a great deal, but wth do I know lol?! Sound like a deal? Would you purchase used clothes on craigslist (as long as they seem in good shape? I'm not going to buy a bunch of stained, worn out crap.

Re: Shopping craigslist?

  • I'm a huge craigslist user. In fact, in the last week I've made $500 selling a few things I needed to get rid of to make room for baby.

But I have some rules when I buy stuff. I don't ever by anything cloth, unless I can bleach the crap out of it or re-upholster it. I have gone to houses where clearly the people were hoarders, and their house was disgusting. No amount of cleaning could get rid of that smell on an upholstered couch, nevermind having to deal with bed bugs/fleas.

So, in my opinion, schedule a time to come see the stuff and don't commit to buying the clothes. Yes, 75 seems like a great deal, but her idea of "clean" and your idea of clean might differ. I personally rather buy used from a consignment than craigslist, because the clothes have been screened for me.

  • While I have looked on Craigslist, I have actually found more that I am comfortable buying from Facebook swap groups... For example the one I found is called (My City) Kid's Stuff only swap, sell, or trade... something to that effect!  I got a huge lot of onesies and sleepers for $20.00...

The reason I feel more safe with this situation is because you can mostly see the profile of the person you are going to buy from... also, they usually have other people that have bought stuff from them on the same group page, so you know they have sold stuff without being shady.  Just another option!

  • I have never bought any clothing from craigslist for the same reason pp mentioned.  You can find some good items that are useful on there though, just be picky about what you need/want and make sure you can clean it.  Also, don't be afraid to back out if you when you see something it isn't what you expected.

  • I don't think I would get clothes, no.  Cleanliness factor and clothes are fun to buy and not too $$.

We got an AMAZING crib deal via CL this weekend.  $600+ real wood crib with the toddler rails and mattress (which I think we will use - they always used a waterproof cover and judging by their home they are clean) for $200.  And they gave us a free changing table too!

Thanks ladies! This is why I trust you all. I brought it up to hubs, who immediately replied "I'm not putting my daughter in clothes bought from Craigslist. Also, I was thinking clean= my version of clean. Wasn't thinking about possible hoarders. THANK YOU!!!!

  • Craigslist can be hit or miss, but it might be worth checking out. Did she post any pics of the haul or can she send you any?

I'm an FTM and can't wait to hit the consignment sales! I plan on getting a swing/jumper, etc. at these sales. ConsignmentMommies has lists of sales for most states. A lot of sales are happening in March/April and many let FTM in early or for free.
  • Wow. Awesome site @dharmatron! Thanks!
  • I like craiglist for bigger things mostly.. I'm trying to find a dresser on there to match our crib so I don't have to shell out $600 at BRU.  I would buy baby "gear" as long as I could sanitize it completely.  Like maybe a walker/bouncer that I could douse in Clorox (and detach/wash at fabric parts).  Clothes....I figure enough people will bring clothes to the shower, and with that and hand me downs, it should have to buy to many...but FTM here, so who knows if that's accurate.

  • I have a love hate relationship with craigslist.

I hate selling stuff on craigslist because people are so unreliable, super shady or idiotic.  People always schedule a time to come by and then don't show up or call. People ask you to leave your stuff outside and say they will slip some of the money under the door while you are at work. People show up in tiny cars to haul off big furniture. And everyone will offer less than you ask so always ask for more. But, I still use it....

As for buying baby stuff, I just got a really nice dresser / changing table for $40 because the seller is moving and needed to offload it quickly. Found it after a week of browsing craigslist.

I think buying baby clothes on craigslist is fine, so long as it is in good condition and the house isn't disgusting (smoke-free environment, etc).  Just make sure to put it directly into the washer or leave it outside until the washer is free; that'll kill any bugs.

  • I didn't see if anyone posted but there is a sale called just between friends that is going on in the spring in many city's! I've been to a couple and they are great spent like fifty bucks walked out with a car full of toys. That's what I was going for at the time. This time I'm scooping out the baby carriers for an ergo and a swing (dd didn't like hers so a different style) and a high chair. You can view photos of previous sales on Facebook!

  • I would totally buy clothes. No germs are going to survive the hot wash cycle unless it's super filthy, in which case it will be visible.

  • If rather bit clothes there bc they'll be used briefly and discarded. I'll spend money on the big items that will be used long term, I.e. Stroller.

  • I'd buy from craigslist but as PPs have said, only after seeing the items in person. I'm a liver of garage sales and consignment sales for clothes. I've bought lots of other items off craigslist.

@slamber and @uganamafans, I lived in Monroe, GA for 2.5 yrs an all my neighbors with small kids sold at a consignment sale for Gwinnett county. Here's the website https://www.kidsignments.com

  • I just bought a Rock N Play on CL last night.  It looks like it's in great shape and I can wash pretty much all of it.  I have not bought any clothes on CL before. But I'm also a FTM so what do I know?
I second PPs idea of joining a local facebook sale group.  I belong to one in my area that sells all sorts of things, from baby clothes to cars.  I've bought a couple things on there and I like the idea that you can see the seller's profile and they will get kicked out of the group if they are being shady.

  • We bought a stroller on Craigslist last month that I'm really excited about. An all-terrain double stroller costs at minimum $500, not counting any accessories. This woman was selling a Bumbleride Indie Twin (which I hadn't even considered because it's out of our budget) with a ton of accessories for way less. It was in near perfect condition and I'm still amazed we got it. I will definitely consider CL for other stuff, don't know about clothes particularly but not ruling them out.

  • I've been stalking craigslist for furniture.  At some point I will start looking for back-up items, like another stroller or high chair for my mom's house or something.  I would buy smaller items, too, if I came across something I needed.  I probably won't buy clothes.  I don't trust people enough.

  • I just scored a great deal on a Moby carrier for $15 on Craigslist :) I have purchased some maternity clothing on eBay as well. I would definitely purchase baby gear from Craigslist, not sure about clothing though...

  • I look at Craigslist daily for good baby deals. I got our double bob with parent cup holder thing for $250! With my first pregnancy I bought all my maternity clothes from a lady on CL too. I just made sure to wash them first
  • I wouldn't buy a lot of clothes, just because you might like some and not others, but you are stuck paying for all of them.  I prefer clothes shopping at consignment or thrift stores because I like to pick each individual item.  .

That being said, I really do like CL for larger items that are pretty straightforward.  I just bought a Dutailier glider & ottoman for $60 this weekend on CL, which I thought was a great deal.  I'll be keeping an eye out for other items, but that was the one thing I really wanted to buy used, so I'm happy.

I love CL for other stuff too.  We got rid of our old, peeling crappy couch in like 30 min on the free section.  I was honestly surprised someone wanted it because we would have just thrown it away, but I seriously got like 30 replies in 20 min.  Crazy.
  • I am planning to get all of our nursery furniture on CL. I have already gotten a 2012 (but never assembled - just sat in an empty room) Graco Stanton crib, unused crib mattress and changing table for $100. I plan to buy a glider off CL as well, in a couple months after we get the room finished.

I'd be comfortable buying clothes off CL if I could see them first. And like PP said, nothing a hot wash can't fix in terms of cleanliness. I just probably won't look for that in particular because there will be 15 women from DH's family coming to my shower and I can only imagine all the clothes I'll be getting from them, plus hand-me-downs from friends whose babies have outgrown theirs.
