Refusing to Poop

We are potty training and DD is refusing to poop, to the point where she will hold it all day. She pees in the potty just fine, but pooping is scary to her. When she has to poop, she cries and tells us she doesn't need to potty and wants us to pick her up and hold her. She has lost her appetite during meals and I am starting to get worried. We have a pedi appt for a different issue this week, so while there I plan to discuss this but in the meantime, some tips from other moms would be nice.

We are doing a really gentle and casual approach to potty training. I'm not into the 3 day method. I think that would stress her out (and me too). She is ready and has all the signs, she loves being a big girl and peeing in the potty. When she goes, she feels so proud of herself. We don't get mad at her if she has accidents so I have no idea where this is coming from. Before when she was learning, she pooped in the potty all the time and did great. Then she regressed after we moved across the country and we put pottying on hold for several months. Then she started telling us she was a big girl and didn't want to wear a diaper anymore. We told her big girls pee in the potty and since then she's been diaper free. She has been doing wonderfully except for pooping.

Re: Refusing to Poop

  • we went through the same thing. DD was just very afraid. We gave her lots of fluids and offered pears. That way poop is soft and the pears have a gentle "laxative effect". then when it was time we held and hugged her on the potty so she wouldnt be afraid. took about a week and she was pee and poop trained. Good luck!

  • My son has had a pooping issue since he was an infant and is currently on Lactolose to help soften his poop. Also I give him lots of fruits and veggies to eat. One of his favorites is corn! Corn will definitely make you poop! He doesn't like to poop because of the issues he had as a baby where his stool was a big ball and somewhat hard because he was holding in the poop and not letting it out. Took him to the GI doctor who prescribed the Lactolose. We tried Miralax at one point but that tore his stomach up and gave him belly aches. Now he is to the point where he doesn't want nobody to know when he is pooping! LOL! He completely will leave the room and poop but what the weird thing is, he throws a fit when I try to change his diaper!!! Im not sure what that is all about. I don't know anybody who wants to walk around or play with a poop filled diaper! LOL!
