Potty training?

Has anyone else started potty training?! We started off and on a couple weeks ago and DS stayed in underwear all day yesterday and will today too. He's doing really good! Only one accident yesterday an even went to the store and stayed dry. I'm a nervous reck for tomorrow at daycare! I'm sending pull ups to see how he does there because obviously he will be way more distracted there than at home. How is everyone else doing it or going to do it?

Re: Potty training?

  • I don't think DS is anywhere near ready to do it. We're waiting till at least 2.

  • We also have a potty seat where DS likes to sit on it before bath time & anytime mom is going in to go herself. He has yet to actually go in it yet, but I am not really doing it for "real" either. I like him getting used to it & catching onto the idea of it first.

I keep debating with myself to go ahead & get the pull ups, but haven't yet. Maybe next time we need some I'll pick some up & see how they go.

  • Alex is not ready at all yet. He does not let us know when he has to go, so I think we'll wait a while longer and just do it at his own pace.
Good job for staying (almost) dry for both days! And good luck at daycare tomorrow :-)

  • We put him on the toilet (we got one of those awesome toilet seats that has a potty training one built in like this one: https://www.lowes.com/pd_229596-1597-783EC+000_0__) before bath every night and if he mentions it in the morning but really just to get him used to it. He very rarely actually goes potty in there and has asked to go potty a couple of times, but then doesn't actually go. We're letting him guide us on this one.

We started at 19 months and did the three day method. Worked like a charm! We don't do pullups except at night/nap though I wish we hadn't started that- he was always dry at the beginning, and is now often wet when he wakes. I didn't think he really had the control at 19 months to stay dry, but now it is going to be a process to STTN and stay dry :) I really think cloth diapering helped us to be successful early on- DS was very aware of when he needed to go and had been going #2 on the toilet since about 10 months. It was much easier than many people talk of. We had 2 accidents on day one and not after! It was great. We used a sticker chart and a mini chocolate chip for reinforcement and he actually had fun. He also got to choose undies to wear.

  • DS isn't anywhere close to being ready, much as I would like him to be potty trained by the time LO arrives in January. We sit him on the potty every night before his bath, but he's only gone a couple of times.

  • Emma has made recent signs that she might be ready, but we are not pushing her.

We have the Fisher Price Duck potty set up in our bathroom. In the past week, she has asked a couple of times to sit on the potty...but nothing happened. She also lets me know right away when she is pooping and immediately wants a nappy change. We are taking a more when she's ready, we will begin approach.

  • We did potty training this weekend. She had been asking to go potty for weeks and was successful a lot of the time, so we decided to just go for it. No more diaper or pull-ups (except at night). I take the 3-day potty training approach, but with DD2  it was a little difficult because she's not much of a drinker (she only sips things throughout the day) and she can hold it for ages (like 3-4 hours), so she doesn't get that practice of constantly going to the potty. Yesterday she did really well - only one poop accident (during nap, she also went poop on the potty yesterday). Today she's back at daycare so, we'll see how it goes. Her regular teacher is gone today which makes me a little nervous about it.

I don't send pull-ups to daycare.  I think they're so confusing for kids because they can't tell when they pee. I just take lots of extra undies and clothes. Our DC was great when DD1 was learning, and when I dropped DD2 off this morning they were so supportive. They will pretty much do whatever parents want them to do. It does help that our director really supports my undies only approach.

  • We won't attempt until after 2. He is not ready at this point. We may try right after he turns 2 and if he still isn't ready, we will wait a few months.

  • DS has been peeing in the potty at home since he was 17 or 18 months and at school starting around 19-20 months. He wears diapers when we're out and about or traveling (we thought he was too young, we're lazy, we didn't want to push him, etc), but he's started to fight them and also wake up from naps dry, so we're throwing the diapers away in 10 days.

    I highly recommend https://www.jamieglowacki.com/ as a resource.

  • We have a potty for DD that we sit her on before she takes a bath, in hopes that we'll get her to pee there instead of the tub.  But she is no where near ready for "real" potty training.  We'll probably start that sometime after she turns 2.
This is us.  We offer the potty and he loves to go sit on it and play, but is definitely not ready nor is he showing us signs when he needs to go.  DD was 2 1/2 when she was fully PT (including at night) so I'm not going to stress too much.  Plus I hear boys are a lot harder to to PT.

  • I used the 3-day potty training method to train my son and by the fourth day, he's already diaper-free. I also used motivational tools and stickers on the chart to encourage him to use the potty trainer and lately, toilet with potty seat in it.

  • We want to so bad. We tell B that he needs to tell us when he has to go. He tells us potty after he has gone. We are trying to get him used to sitting on the toilet but he just thinks of it as a game at this point. Maybe soon.

Hes in size 4 slip ons. Will he fit into pull ups yet?

  • It's been a while since I've posted!  Glad to see the board is still active.

We used the 3-day method the week before he turned two.  By day four he was trained.  He stays dry for all naps, long car rides and about 19 nights out of 20.  We went cold turkey and I do not regret it for one second!!  It's been over a month now and he doesn't even need a travel potty anymore, he'll use a regular toilet if someone is holding him.  Cannot more highly recommend the 3day potty training ebook.  Your toddler might just surprise you!
