Working out with baby

So I am really trying to get my butt in gear.  I signed up for weight watchers and I want to try to incorporate exercise into my life.

I was always active- I hiked, power walked, did yoga and weight training- pre baby.  Now that my son is 5 months old, I want to regain that part of my lifestyle but am finding it hard because I am a SAHM with a husband that works long hours.  I am with my LO basically 24/7.  Any suggestions of creative ways to work out with baby?  I am going to start walking/strolling him more, but its cold out and so if there are any other ideas for the days when its really frigid I would appreciate it.

TIA!

Re: Working out with baby

  • I belong to a gym where I can get 2 hours of child care for extra cost to my membership. I also joined a boot camp that is in a facility with child care. Here is a great site to start with! https://www.fitmomsforlife.com/join_now/ It's his boot camp I go to but there is something you can do at home! Good luck and as long as your are doing something, be proud!

  • Half hour videos are great for short nappers. I have Physique 57's whole set of DVDs, and they have 30 minute condensed workouts. Really challenging and effective but doesn't require you to jump around/take up a ton of room/make a lot of noise.

  • There are a lot of strength training exercises you can do at home with just your body weight. You can get a good strength training workout in as little as 20 minutes, so you could totally do that during baby's nap time.

Awesome for you, taking care of yourself!
  • I can usually get in about 30-40 minutes while he is napping, but on the days he doesn't nap or our schedule is different, he usually likes to bounce in his bouncer while I exercise…he likes to watch my feet as I jump around, lol.  Watching me no doubt look silly while I Zumba and whatnot seems to be pretty entertaining, luckily.  I have the TurboFire DVDs, which have a few shorter workouts (15, 25, or 30 minutes) that I can do on the days when he is fussy and wants to be held more.  We got for walks in the stroller as well when the weather is nice enough…haven't done it much lately, but maybe in the Spring when it warms up a bit.
  • I love yoga so I subscribe to MyYogaOnline. It's $10/month (or $90/yr), and there are SO many videos to choose from! You can filter by time, level, type, whatever. You can also just search so if you were looking for, say, a pre-run stretch or a post-party's specific workout, it would be easy to find. I also like to go on walks/runs when it isn't raining.

  • It's hard to find time to exercise while baby is sleeping or occupied... so exercise with your baby!! Check out my book, Baby Weight, and even more useful perhaps, the videos on BabyWeight.TV. There are videos for all levels that incorporate the baby into the exercises for a fun and fabulous workout. Also there you will find videos NOT with baby for a power workout while baby is sleeping or int he jumper watching Baby Einstein!

  • @Mille1984... I forgot to tag you in the previous response:

  • My gym (with 2 hrs of free daycare, like pp) doesn't take babies until they are 6 months. That said, when we did join the gym, it really helped with that 24/7 feeling (totally get that.) There is a cost associated, for sure; but if you have an option like this, you can accomplish a lot with one membership (daycare, workouts, classes, pool, tennis, new friends,...)

At 5 months, I did a lot of P90X at home, while DS napped. I enjoyed it and it did a lot for my moods (and gave me something in my day that was for ME).  Free idea... Pinterest. I see lots of workouts there that are simple (no equipment), but structured enough to keep you motivated.

@Millie1984, I just noticed,.... our boys have the same name!

  • I totally understand how you feel! I was very active prior to being pregnant and also throughout my pregnancy. I'm in Canada, so I'm also stuck indoors until spring. I've tried the gym, walking on the indoor run track with my stroller, but found I was cutting my workouts short as soon as LO started to fuss. I will hold LO up in front of me with my elbows resting on my chest, so we are face to face. I then squat down as low as I can back up again. My son (4.5 months) LOVES it and giggles up a storm. I also have stairs in my house that I run up and down for 1 minute intervals (without LO in arms) that are just brutal for me. The next day I will be sore from the squats. When they started getting easier, I just slowed the speed of the squat to increase the intensity. I will also do a one legged squat with a leg lift behind me with baby in arms. 3 sets of 20 reps of either squat, gets my heart rate up. Also, look up tabata, and you can create your own workout with body weight and cardio moves such as mountain climbers, burpees, push ups etc, and these can be done while baby is sleeping or awake. Good luck and have fun with it!!

  • I have been doing the 30 day shred. It's a short enough workout that I can usually squeeze it in.

  • I do home videos (currently doing P90X) and we go on hikes (not to steep obviously). I don't feel too comfortable leaving my LO with the care providers at the gym so this works for us.
