High-Risk Pregnancy

Cervix shortening w/ cerclage

My stupid cervix is shortening again even with a cerclage. It went from over 4cm 4 weeks ago to 2.64 today. He's also so low and pressing on my cervix. And the tech said he's "kinda big". He's around 2lbs 5oz and was near a pound 4 weeks ago. My fluid is low too.

They did a FFN test and said we should know the results tmw or Weds.

I want to add my cervix shortened w/ #2 and I was on BR for 7ish weeks and it held strong around 1.7 and I went 39 weeks and was induced. I didn't have a cerclage w/ that pregnancy either.

I'm trying to stay positive that it's at least 2.7 and closed. But I'm still worried. Anyone else's cervix continue to shorten w/ a cerclage? I'm 25w4d. I'm also trying to decide if I should put myself on BR.

Re: Cervix shortening w/ cerclage

  • hi, sorry your going through this. I had some significant shortening before and after my cerclage w. I ended up getting a pessary device placed which helped greatly. I would inquire about that option if I were you. You might not be short enough. I was @ 0.5 cm. GL.

Sorry for the shortening!  I know it is stressful.  My cervix has generally held at about 4cm during this pregnancy (I am 27w5d).  However, over Christmas when I was more active that I should have been, it had gone down to about 2.8-3cm.  I went back to staying off my feet and resting more, and at my next appt it was back to 4cm.

Then last week I went in and the doctor saw funneling and shortening again, but we saw the baby's head pressed right up against my cervix.  When she moved, the funneling stopped and the cervix got longer, all while the transvaginal ultrasound was being done.  I go back this afternoon for another cervical length check so we'll see how it looks today.

I guess my point is that the cervix is very dynamic and could continue to fluctuate, especially depending on (1) where the baby is positioned and (2) how active you are.  In my experience at least, staying off my feet, no lifting, etc. seems to be the best thing for me.  2.7 and still closed is still in the "normal" range, though I know how frustrating it is when it shortens.  I hope things go smoothly and you cook your LO as long as possible!

ETA: I should add that I do have a preventative cerclage as well.
