Abdominal Scars

Anybody have them??? I wasn't really worried about mine until recently.

I have one from my appendectomy (not laparoscopic) less than a year ago and it was killing me yesterday during the ultrasound when they were pushing in over that part of my abdomen. Now I'm worried it's going to be painful when it pushes out! I'm also a little worried that there will be some crazy weird stretch mark action happening in that area.

Has anybody here experienced pregnancy with an abdominal scar? How did it feel, and how does it look now?

Re: Abdominal Scars

  • I only have a scar from having my bellybutton pierced. I removed it when pregnant with my first and it was fine.

With my 2nd, it grew several huge and ugly stretch marks. They are seriously twice as thick as all my other stretch marks and still bright purple whereas my others have faded. Real attractive.

  • I have had tons of lap surgeries and I see them getting weaker already. Don't know much about why though.
  • I have a scar from my mole removal on my lower back that is stretching like crazy from my tummy growth. It's super sensitive and I'm definitely curious/concerned what's going to happen to it over the next 5 months!

  • I had one from an appendectomy and it has always been sensitive. Pregnancy made it a little more sensitive but it didn't hurt that much. Mine is very small, though, so that could be why it doesn't bother me.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I had an appendectomy 3yrs before I had any children, and never had a problem out of it during pregnancies and this is number 3. The only fairly new surgery I have had is my gallbladder surgery (4 tiny incisions) in 2012 and this is my first pregnancy since receiving thar scar. My csection scar (two csections, one initial scar that they followed over) is the only one that gets sore sometimes. But thats all for me. It gets sore but not majorly painful.

I had surgery when I was born because my digestive system was born outside of my body. I had a scar going all the way up my stomach to my breast. It has faded over time so we can barely see it now, I hope it doesn't get big and ugly lol

Did you have Gastroschesis (sp?) @jmar2011?
A friend of mines son had it and it was so scary, but he is fine and is a healthy happy sweet little boy. :)
  • Sorry, my phone glitched. Once it lets me edit I'll remove the extras.
  • Thanks for this post.  I had Gallbladder surgery last April, (laparoscopic) I had 4 small incisions, 3 healed fine, but the higher one (the biggest one) broke open a few weeks after my surgery & it took me almost 2 months to heal. :(  It still is very itchy & at times swells (just really puffs up).

    So thanks for this post!

I had emergency surgery for twisted intestines while 34 weeks with DD, they cut me open from my breasts to my pelvis because they had to be able to take DD out while they untwisted everything. They were able to get her back in and not have to deliver her and I ended up carrying her full term and having a natural delivery, even with the freshly healed scar. I have noticed some pulling.pain near the scar at my belly button recently and I have a rather large adhesion near the top which I'm sure will get uncomfortable. However it's definitely doable. My OB team explained to me that I could have a c section if I wanted but that the muscles they cut during the surgery weren't big players in pushing a baby out and I had no problems, I only pushed for half an hour.

ETA: Now, 2.5 years later, my scar is definitely visible and rather large, but it has faded immensely. Keep in mind I had to heal up with DD kicking and moving in there. No weird stretch marks or anything like that around it and none so far this time around.
I'm glad your surgery went so well and thats so crazy how they technically removed her from you and put her back without any issue! Thats amazing :) They wanted to remove my gallbladder while pregnant with DS2 but I vouched to suffer through pregnancy (and for an additional 10months). I was scared to have surgery while pregnant besides to remove baby. I didnt think it'd be safe. But your surgery was much more complicated to perform and a much larger incision and you and your DD are fine. I've never heard of intestines getting twisted before... Glad you're both okay!!

@jmar2011 oh okay. Yeah my friends son they seen it on an u/s and once born he had the corrective surgery, it is where his intestines were outside of his body when born. So yours sounds similiar. If you have the letter maybe you can compare it to what it says online about Gastroschesis. I doubt your insides are jacked lol they just probably aren't in perfect order compared to if they were in spot when born. They function and that is all that matters! :) But looking up Gastroschesis might give you more insight on what you had as an infant and lived without knowing about it for 18yrs.

DD had a good chance of survival at that point but also I was in extreme pain and they didn't know why. After a day of testing I was finally transferred to another hospital to see a specialized surgeon and he told me flat out he thought I was going to die soon. I agreed to let him do exploratory surgery since no tests could figure out what was wrong. He told me it would be a small incision from breasts to the top of the uterus, so I was shocked when I woke up. There was also an OB in the OR monitoring DD. And yes, I had no idea that they could pull your uterus out and put it back. Amazing. It ended up for the best though as the surgeon told me my intestines were blue and had they waited even an hour more both DD and I probably would have died.

Please note this was so rare, neither the surgeon or OB had ever seen anything like it before. I had Gastric Bypass surgery in 2007 and they said that may have been the reason but they don't know for sure and don't know if it will happen again this time. So no worries ladies, this won't happen to you!

  • I have 5 scars from a lap to remove an ovarian cyst and fibroids from my uterus about two years ago. I felt a little twang the other day on one of the lower ones, but I hope it will be fine.

@LegalLadyBug I am SO glad you agreed to the surgery even if you were scared. I lost a young, non-pregnant friend to an intestinal issue and I really wish she had gone to to the doctor sooner. Left behind two VERY young kids. My heart sill aches.

  • Sorry this is kind of a late response but thank you everybody for the replies! I'm feeling a bit better about the scar after hearing from y'all, although it's already started to pucker a bit more this week :-/ I think I have a small adhesion in one spot so that might be why.

    @LegalLadyBug what an incredible story!!!
