The posts I simply do not understand...

"My doctor said it was perfectly safe to take X, but I don't trust her so I'm going to ask a bunch of anonymous people online. Do you think I should take this medicine my highly trained, extensively educated health professional prescribed for me? According to WebMD, the Mayo Clinic, Google, my midwife, the pharmacist, and my mom who is an OB nurse, it's been proven safe, but I still don't feel sure about taking it."

I just... I don't... Why? Why do they do this? 

And if some random yahoo on this board responds, "ZOMG! I read on [insert name of poorly sourced blog run by a high school dropout] that drug will totes turn your baby into a purple kangaroo! You totally shouldn't take it!!" are they going to ignore their doctor in favor of the advice from Ms. Batshit McCrazypants?

    Let's not discount the  medical professionals who give BAD advice. Every once in a while you will learn of a doctor/pharmacist/nurse/midwife who gives out advice that seems to fly in the face of every other doctor/pharmacist/nurse/midwife in the known universe. Regardless - it is always their opinion. SOmetimes it is comforting to get the "opinions" of 100 other doctor/pharmacist/nurse/midwifes via their patients on the internet. I'm not saying it is the best medicine but sometimes I get it.

We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

    however, this is where you should also be talking to your pharmacist! That's why they have their little "consultation" sign on one side of the pharmacy and "pickup" on the other. Any questions I have about meds and what I should/shouldn't take I consult my pharmacist. Yes, it's my sister, but still, that's what she's been in school for the past six years for, so use it right?!

    @Luna C....I have to thank God that I didn't bump with #1. With #3 I trust my doc and am also puzzled by some of these questions. I almost missed the drama avoiding the posts about the stretch marks. But I looooovvvveee when people get their asses GIF'd because of crazy ass questions!!!


    With DD#1 he wouldn't even let me get a 3D/4D ultrasound. He said he hadn't seen enough research on it. Me and DH just said ok. The guy has been delivering babies since before I was born...lol

    My dr said it's a horse but I've been looking at goooglr and it could be a cat. What do you guys think. I trust your opinion way more then my doctor who spent countless years in school plus has god knows how many years of experience.

    Happy Tuesday. You read my mind with some posts. I'm all for sharing stories/asking questions, but I am annoyed by women asking questions that their doctor already answered! It also makes me sad to see all the negative comments/replies that some ladies make...those make me nervous to post my own discussions!!

    Don't be nervous @rileymiller!! If you post something silly and you get snark just laugh and roll with it. It reminds me of my girlfriends and me hanging out, if one of us says something stupid the others jump on her and we all have a good laugh. The 20 pg crazies come when people can't take a joke or don't realize their question was redic. You'll be fine. Just keep a sense of humor. I keep waiting for one of my questions to get the hammer dropped on it.

    But medicine is not one size fits all. I was told not to take aspirin, but we all know women who are prescribed a low dose due to clotting issues. I'm Ok to take asthma meds, but most other women would be told to avoid those steroids. A random stranger cannot give you better medical advice than the doctor who knows your medical history.

    If someone really has reason to question their doc's advice, they need to check with other medical professionals. Not their fellow bumpies.

    I'll add to this by saying that if you don't trust your doctor or midwife, the answer is to get a new doctor or midwife that you trust. Its important not just for medication questions but for decisions that are going to need to be made down the road. I have a feeling a lot of the "my doctor said...buuuut" people are going to be the "my doctor wants to induce....what do I doooo??" People In a few months. Find someone whose advice you trust so that your not constantly having to second guess them. (That said with the caveat that yes, it's ok to question things even your doctor tells you. But if you find yourself doing it constantly, or over the smallest of things, that's a bigger problem you need to address before you're further along.)

    I actually question my doctors all the time. But I like the team I have because whenever I question their advice they can provide me with their thought process, the other ways to handle it and why that's not their first choice for me, etc.

    I think a lot of people just don't like to question their doctors and therefore they don't build that sense of trust. They get intimidated and then 2nd guess because they don't have all the info they should. So they come here and get bad information. :)

    Ugh, I don't believe in running to the internet for any medical advice, but I'm the one with a friend who decided not to vaccinate based upon a YouTube video so this might be a sore subject for me, LOL. The majority of my research time goes into researching my care providers, to ensure they're in line with my beliefs, and properly educated to my satisfaction. If I have questions, I ask them for resources to further investigate. I've never once had anyone try to dissuade me from looking into an issue further, and I am not ever afraid fo a second opinion, which I am open about. The only online resources I trust are ones such as the Mayo Clinic, etc.  People like that make me want to go live in Greenland. :(

    There are all kinds of these on What to Expect too. I don't even look at that board anymore because so many- I have a UTI or I have this infection and doc gave me antibiotics but I don't think I should take them or is it safe. Der, your OB prescribed it, I think s/he knows which are safe and which are not.
    And yes to the blurry U/S pics asking for gender thoughts and its a profile shot of babe or an 8 week pic. Seriously...

    I'm not saying I agree with it just saying that sometimes I get it. When I am at home I trust my doctor 100%. But here - I have no choice in my careprovider, some of who I find to have questionable experience/knowledge/brain cells so my only option for research is Dr. Google or my internet friends - which is a crappy ass option. But sometimes it is all I have - so yeah - sometimes I get it.  That doesn't mean I think it is the best place to get medical advice.
