Cervical length??

I see lots of posts about measuring cervical length and growth ultrasounds. My OB does not do this.
How often are you having your cervix measured and growth ultrasounds done? What week did it start?

Re: Cervical length??

  • I agree with @MrsLee04. I'm seeing my OB & an MFM, but they are both checking. I go every 2 weeks (started at 16 weeks) & will continue until about 30 weeks. Growth ultrasound once a month. I would suggest an MFM as well. My OB just happens to be super cautious & hyper about this stuff, so I'm definitely well covered :)

  • It's checked during the ultrasound, and can be done fairly quickly. There is a chance they measured but didn't point it out because it's not a problem. My MFM checks every time, and my OB's u/s tech did too. The tech rarely mentions it; I just go twice a week, so I know what I'm looking at by now.
  • My OB didn't measure cervix length. They left it to my MFM. I was seen once a month by each, so I was really being seen every two weeks. The MFM also did growth scans of each baby. As I got closer to my due date I started going more frequently for growth and cervix check.

  • At 17 weeks, I'd had one OB appt and one u/s. I may suggest seeing your OB every 4 weeks, but it all depends on your risks and complications (my modis have turned out to have a slew of problems, so they are doing more than normal with me). Di/Di twins tend to have fewer problems, so you may be fine! But if you're concerned, I would ask.
  • I was going to my OB every 4 weeks for an ultrasound to check fetal growth and cervical length.  Which I am glad that they check because I have a ton of braxton hicks contractions everyday.   They do the checks monthly until 28 weeks, then they go to every 2 weeks.  Soo I will start going every 2 weeks.  I don't see a MFM.

  • Technically I am only being seen by an OB. However, my file is being followed by the MFM that originally discovered the twins (long story) at a different hospital that is far away. With that said, I have gotten growth scans every 4 weeks since the beginning  and then at 18 weeks it went to every two weeks and they started measuring cervix length. I had major shortening at 28 weeks 3.9cm down to 1.3cm. Now, at almost 32 weeks I'm getting scans every week that measure both cervix and babies. I've also started NST so I'm actually seen twice a week now until delivery.

Side note- do you know what kind of twins you're having? I'm mobile bumping and can't see your siggy.

  • Mine started at my Anatomy scan with the MFM/Perinatologist at 18 weeks. I now have appointments every 2 weeks alternating between a growth scan and cervical length check and my OB - they do a check at my OB's office to (always do a quick US there too since it can be difficult to check the heartbeats with just a doppler when there are multiples). It's my OB's practice that all multiples patients are seen for monthly growth scans regardless of zygosity. I'm di/di, which is considered the lowest risk for twin pregnancies, but have still had some concerns (SUA and spots on baby B's liver). He's also measuring a tad behind (only about a week right now), but they want to keep a close eye on it.

  • OB refuses to give me referral to MFM. She says twins are not high risk.
I would find a new OB.

To answer your original question, the typical time they do cervical checks is during the anatomy scan which is around 20 weeks. However the answer varies with multiples depending on a variety of factors and if you are being seen by a MFM. I have an appt this week and they will be doing a cervical check at this appt. Not sure how often they will do it or if my OB will also do it in a few weeks but I assume that if it is nice and thick they will not do a repeat for a few weeks at least but if it is thinner then they will probably check more frequently.

  • I saw my OB once per month and has growth u/s w my MFM once per month as well. My cervix was checked once, at the anatomy scan, and then not again.

My MFM told me that the growth u/s were prob not necessary w di/di twins. But that they did them out of being super super cautious.

  • Also at my doctor's practice, every multiples pregnancy is connected with the preterm labor program where we get weekly calls from a nurse to check in on how we're feeling, check in about kick counts, contractions etc. This will start around 24-28 weeks for me. I'll probably get the referral at my appointment next week.

  • OB refuses to give me referral to MFM. She says twins are not high risk.
I got my RE to do the referral as my OB said the same thing.

I have had appointments with the MFM every 3 weeks since 14 weeks, alternating between growth scans, and OB check ups although the OB check ups include short ultrasounds as well. Being di/di puts us in the lowest category of risk, but it puts my mind at ease to have the extra monitoring. I'm sure you are in good hands, but don't be afraid to advocate for yourself if you are uneasy.

  • My previous singleton pregnancies were in Canada, and now I'm in Australia. The care is VERY different. Can't tell if it's just the laid back attitude here, or that it's my third pregnancy. Either way, I had to speak up and say I wanted more frequent appts. They checked my cervix at the 18 week scan, and then said it won't be checked again unless I've had previous cervical issues/surgery? A friend with multiples in Canada got hers checked at every appt near the end. Not sure how I feel about this yet. So I get your concern!
  • OB refuses to give me referral to MFM. She says twins are not high risk.

Just to echo what others have said. Insist on a referral or get a new ob :)

I am being seen every month by both, I also have it staggered so I see someone every two weeks.
  • I had my first cervical check at 23 weeks.  My MFM doesn't do them on a schedule.   My cervix will get checked if I am having frequent contractions.   However I go every two weeks to the MFM for a twin to twin check since they are mono-di.  I go every 4 weeks to the MFM for growth.

I see my OB every 4 weeks for a blood pressure, urine and heart beat check.  This will increase to every 2 weeks at 28 weeks.

  • My OB started at 12 weeks, and my MFM at 21w (my anatomy scan).  I haven't had any issues or concerns yet but they both check every time i go in for a visit; my OB checks "manually,' and my MFM checks using a transvaginal ultrasound wand.

    time for a new OB.
  • Di/di here. But bc of previous PTL with other babies, I am treated hIGH high risk. MFM and OB every other week until next week (27w) and I start once a week. Cervical length check every time and growth every other time. It is shorten 24w6d from 4.3 to 3.3.
  • Mine was checked at 10 weeks (to get a gauge for what my normal was) and then again at my A/S at 21 weeks.  I was scheduled every 4 weeks to my OB until 20 weeks and then once every 2 weeks.  I was manually checked then.  I'm not going to say you need a MFM because I didn't have one and I don't believe everyone that's pregnant with twins needs one (I realize I'm in the minority here) but you may want to talk to your OB about your concerns or find a new one.   Once every 6 weeks does not sound like enough even with a singleton.  My OB always listened to my concerns and let me come in to get checked whenever I wanted during my pregnancy....I probably saw him every 2 weeks through my whole pregnancy cause I freaked out over things...
Also, I did IVF and had di/di twins.
