  • What did you hear about the booster and what source?

  • My pedi told us the booster was required for LO to be fully vaccinated.  We have to wait a month between shots so she isn't getting it until 1/22 but I wasn't aware is was optional.

This except our pedi wanted us back after 2 weeks. It'll end up being 3 weeks since he had the first one since they ran out of the vaccine.

  • I was told that because she got her flu shot recently and it's so far into flu season that I can use my judgement about whether to bring her back in for the booster. I wish someone would have said one way or the other lol because I have no idea whether to do it.
  • Sorry didn't mean to worry anyone! I haven't heard anything negative about getting the booster our pedi recommends it as well and we have our appointment today. Yesterday I was talking about getting the booster to a couple pediatric nurses I know. I was saying how terrible G feels after his shots and they said that at one point there was a shortage and nobody was getting boosters. They seemed to feel it wasn't 100% necessary but said better to be safe. I was just curious if all pediatricians(even in different states) were recommending.

  • @mufflerlove, that's kinda why I was wondering and also because he's not in daycare. But the flu is not worth the risk in my opinion we are going to get the booster to be on the safe side.

  • He got the flu shot at his 6 month appointment and the pedi said he won't be able to get the booster because they will be out of the vaccine by then. She said that one dose is better than none. I thought it was strange as she said it, but trusted her since she is the doctor. Now after reading all these responses, I'm worried!

  • I tried to get a booster for O but our office ran out. The nurse said that the first shot offered 85-90% of protection.

  • DS2 got the first shot at his 6 month appointment where he was 6 months and 3 days old. They said he needed to come back in a month for the second and I didn't think of it as a booster, but rather the full dose being completed. They were out of 2 other vaccines and I needed to go back for DS1's 3 year old physical anyway so we will be getting LO's 2nd flu shot, 2 vaccinations and all of the 3 year old shots next month.
Ick writing that out makes me think we're in for a rough day. Did I mention it's also the 3 year old's first dentist appointment that day too? That should be tons of fun.

  • @calikat80, wow that sounds like a rough day. I hope they both take a really long nap for you after GL!

This is what the nurses I was talking to we're saying to me. They said since he isn't in daycare just to use my best judgement because they thought one dose was pretty effective.

  • He got his first shot on Dec. 23, and they said he needs a second shot on or after Jan. 23.  I am assuming that is the booster? So I voted shot and booster.
  • I'm hoping we can get the booster. Our doctors office said they might be out by the time she needs it.

We got the first shot at his 6 month appointment and he goes next week for his booster. The 10-15% chance of him getting the flu without the booster is too high in my eyes, our state had had too many deaths due to flu I'm not going to risk it.

  • LO got his flu shot a few weeks ago at his 6 month well visit. We are going to Florida via airplane this week and the doctor said he is pretty well protected with just the one dose. We will get the booster if they still have the preservative free vaccine.

  • Nope. None for us. May the force be with us.

  • We are supposed to get the booster after Jan 16th, but our health region is out of vaccines so I don't know if they've kept some aside or not. I'm pissed about it. They went on a big media blitz freaking everyone out about the flu and then don't have enough to go around.
  • We did both because I don't want my baby to get the flu. Yes, there is still a small chance but I wanted to offer her the most protection possible.
  • We are so behind. He'll get his 6 month shots tomorrow and he'll he 7 months next Tuesday. (Had to reschedule his appt because of the weather.) I plan on him getting the flu shot tomorrow and any booster needed after.

  • Yes. The first dose was given at 6 months, and the second dose was given 4 weeks later. Our pedi said the initial dose gives *some* protection, but the second dose is required to make sure baby is fully protected.

  • Erghhh...I'm realizing that I really dislike our pediatrician.

My LO got his 6 month shots last week (he's an early July baby) and got the flu shot at that time.  They didn't say anything about a booster and said that he won't need any shots at his 9 month appt.

Sounds like I need to call the pediatrician and find out what the deal is.  <sigh>
  • Grayson got his flu shot today and will get a booster in a month.
