Clomid unmonitored & confused

So apparently the reason why I'm not being monitored while on Clomid is because my insurance doesn't cover it. It only pays for the diagnostics. So if I wanted to be monitored I'd have to pay out of pocket. If I'm going to pay out of pocket I might as well do iui, which my husband does not want to do. He said if we can't have another child then we should adopt. Which I'm totally against. Should I start my next cycle of clomid tmow despite I won't be monitored?

Not be properly monitored on Clomid can be very dangerous to your health.  Any doctor who will prescribe and not monitoring you I would seriously side eye.  I assume you are seeing an OBGYN as no respectable RE would ever do an unmonitored cycle.  The risks are just to great.   Clomid isn't candy it is a serious drug with serious consequences. Just google or search on this board and you will find some scary stuff.   Have you had an HSG and day 3 testing?  Has your husband had a recent semen analysis?

Most women have zero coverage and are OOP on ALL fertility related testing, drugs, montitoring etc... Call your insurance and find out exactly what you are covered for.  And if you are having trouble conceiving and it has been 6 months get proper testing and treatment from a reputable RE ( not an obgyn).

As far as your husbands comments about adoption.... adoption is a great way to build a family but it also is in the 40-50,000 dollars price range for domestic newborn adoption. It can also take a long time and is not an easy road.  And of course insurance won't cover it.  An IUI is pennies compared to that cost...  It sounds like you and your husband need to sit down and go over a plan and do some research so you can make better decisions together.

    Good luck

  • Originally my I gyn prescribed the clomid. She told me to go up to 100mg & if I didn't have sucrss get an RE. That exactly what I did. Yes he did a day 3 blood work, in the past I did an HSG, hubby just had his semen analyzed last month, so he isn't the problem. I had to pretty much beg & cry for him to submit a specimen. Lol if we were to decide on an iui, he would have to submit another specimen. Maybe I will not take clomid this coming cycle. I know it has it time limits as to how long it can be used. I'm so torn because I really want another baby. Ugh
  • Sorry- since you don't have any info in your siggy we can't tell if you have had testing, diagnosis etc... so we assume you have not....

Yes you have a 6x lifetime max... if you aren't being monitored then you don't even know if it is working.  Find an RE is the best advice you will get on this board... you might try stalking and learning a bit from the ladies on TTTC board.

Kate- it goes to a variety of places/people. A large portion can go to the agency if you use one. If you don't use an agency, you will spend a ton on advertising costs to get the word out you are looking for a match. One place I saw said to plan to,spend $500-$1000 per month on advertising and that the average wait time was 18 months. So $1000/mo x 18 months = $18k. Lawyers fees for yourself and one for the birth mom= prob $15K minimum , living expenses for the birth month, home study fees. It just adds up with no guarantee. Very difficult and emotionally trying.

  • @ksgsmu I had an hsg, day 3 bloodwork, & an internal sono. Lol at the prices of adoptions, it's safe to say he will say no to that option. What's really bizarre about that is he was considering international adaption. So regular adoption $40,000-50,000 vs iui package of $1,900. Tmow I will call billing to find out the fees oop for monitoring. But I'm going to bypass taking clomid this next cycle. I know it's a longggggg shot, but imagine if I did become prego w/o clomid (it's ok to dream)
  • Wow. Here in NZ you have to go through the state agency to adopt, which means putting a profile together and hoping a mother picks you. You have to go through some training to ensure you understand what adoption is all about, and get police checks etc.

If you get picked by a mother, then you'll have to pay for a lawyer which is a few hundred dollars.

All maternity care is paid for by the state for all Mums, so there is no cost involved with that.

I guess if the mother came from a different part of the country you could pay for travel for yourself or the mother to be nearby during the birth, but adoptive parents here cannot take the baby home for at least 12 days after baby is born.

Obviously going through the adoption process is emotionally exhausting no matter what, and we don't have a lot of newborn babies available for adoption either, but at least there's not an enormous financial cost as well.
