BFing Support Groups

S/O breastfeeding classes, I had been meaning to recommend BFing support groups, if your hospital (and/or a local baby store) offers one.  We didn't have any specific BFing issues with my DD, but I met most of my local mom friends through my hospital's BFing support group.  It met once a week at a local church, and was just a great excuse to get out of the house at the start.  It was a place where your baby could scream and you could NIP without being at all self-conscious.  It was led by a lactation consultant and the women set up a playgroup that DD and I still participate in, 16 months later.

I just wanted to recommend them if they are offered in your area!

BFP #1 9/2010 (lost our baby at 21 weeks) BFP #2 8/2011 (ectopic pregnancy) BFP #3 10/2011 (chemical pregnancy) BFP #4 12/2011 (Abigail born 8/15/12) BFP #5 5/2013 (Griffin born 1/23/14 with heart defects, now repaired!)

Re: BFing Support Groups

  • I'm actually interested in this as well. All my mom friends highly recommend it. Scripps has various support groups, don't they? How is it different from the bf class?

Yes, we did the one through Scripps Encinitas.  I didn't take a BFing class, so I can't answer that part of your question.  The support group has no set agenda - the women just sit in a circle and informally ask questions of the LC, and chat.

Yeah I didn't take the BF class, either. I didn't realize there's a LC at the support group. Aren't they free to attend?
  • Yes, that's true, it's women only so you feel comfortable nursing without a cover.  @mdr619, remind me where you're located?  I know the Babies In Bloom store in Vista also has a good group - one of my friends went to that one.

Yep, it's a great free resource, and a good way to meet LCs in case you need additional support outside the group.

  • Le Leche League is also a good support group. You can look up groups in your area on their website. https://www.llli.org/ Its free to attend, or you can become a member (get books, articles, etc) for a fee.

  • I'm in north county San Diego, too. The hospital will give you info on hospital sponsored groups but there is one at Babies in Bloom in Vista that's free, too. I loved it there for dd and will def go back this time around! Tons of helpful info from the LC and other moms. You can also weigh baby before at the meeting to monitor growth/gain.
I hope to create a real siggy but first I need some sleep!

    Mom to Lily and Colin!
  • Another north county SD mom here. I think I'll check one of these out this time around; thanks! I'm still kinda new to the area and I need mom friends.

  • Loved the BF group I went to. It was at a local mom shop that held moms' groups. I gained a lot of nursing confidence from the group. I loved having a place get used to NIP - went from full cover to no cover pretty quickly as I practiced keeping everything modest. I made some great friends from the group.
