She didn't know she was pregnant...

An old friend from HS was complaining about being sick and went to the ER last night. I wake up today and she had given birth at an estimated 5 and a half months. She had stopped getting periods long ago when we were in school. The doctor said it was because she was so overweight. Apparently something was set right a few months back and she never noticed. She was always feeling crappy before so nothing felt like a change.
I always thought the show was complete BS but maybe not. I feel bad she has nothing for a baby.

ETA: I meant 6 and a half months.

That's definitely crazy.  I can't imagine!  How is the baby?
He is in the NICU right now. I guess he is doing really well for having no prenatal care. She says he will be there at least two weeks and she will be released tomorrow morning. They named him Owen and the father picked it.

If happened to a coworker of my H. She was also overweight but in her case she had gone through infertility years before and was in her early 40's and assumed menopause. Nope. Pregnant. Not sure the gestational age of the baby but she gave birth in a restaurant bathroom. Baby was fine other than needing a week in hospital for pneumonia.
It is great to hear that her baby was okay! I am already so paranoid about making sure I do everything perfectly that I can't imagine not knowing. I would be so scared.

  • DH's one coworkers girlfriend found out at 6 months she was pregnant. I just don't get how you don't know.

  • But it is very surprising how one cannot feel the pregnancy if one is pregnant entire system of the body changes .The movement of the child  its kicking  how one cannot understand.I am really surprised to read this article.
  • A good friend of mine found out at 4 months pregnant. She had her period tte entire time and suddenly started feeling queasy and generally unwell. She nearly had a heart attack when she found out she was prego!
  • One of my best friends didn't know until 5 mos. pregnant....I guess she had always had very irregular periods and spotted intermittently throughout the five months, and just never felt much movement. Her main concern was the fact that she had been heavily drinking, going on vacation, etc. etc. and luckily her daughter, now 8, is doing fantastic.

She went on to have a son (that she knew about :-)) and she really looked about 4mos. pregnant the day she gave birth, so I guess she carries small as well.

She's thin and tall for the record, and still didn't know. Shit's cray.

  • Holy hell-- hope her LO is ok!  I can not imagine that kind of shock.

I was looking at a pic of myself yesterday at my baby shower-- where I was about 7 months along (29 weeks) and I was HUUUUUGGGEEE.  I know everyone carries differently, but I do find it hard to believe someone 6.5 months along couldn't tell they were pregnant.

I know this is semantics, but if your friend was pregnant, she was not having her period.  She was experiencing some intermittent bleeding, which is fairly common, and she assumed that was her period.

I think if more women understood this, there would be less stories like this.

I also know someone this happened to.  She went to the hospital thinking she had kidney stones.  Nope - healthy baby girl.  It was a shoooooooooooock.

While I think some of these stories grow from women in denial or are ignorant about their bodies, I think there's a handful who legitimately don't know.  Rare doesn't mean never.

Best of luck to your friend and her new baby, Alyssa!!
Good point-- I tend to agree that there are probably some ladies who legit don't know.  So cray!

My MIL didn't let SIL take sex ed in health class and NEVER had the sex talk with her either. She was not on BCP and she didn't require that guy wear a condom. (She wasn't taught) He told her he'd just pull out before he came. SIL was shocked that the pull out method isn't a viable method of birth control. Though it's the 21st century and ILs have internet, smart phones etc. SIL still became pregnant by ignorance... It does happen today.

  • Wow. I'm very happy the baby is okay at 6 months. I can hardly believe it is possible to not know you're pregnant, but I guess anything is possible...just,..wow...
  • A lady in my woman's studies class in college didn't find out until she was seven months. she did a paper on it and brought a picture of her in a bikini from the week before she found out. her tummy was flat. If your placenta is positioned just right and your baby is inactive during the day i can see how its possible for some.

  • A friend didn't know until she was nearly 8 months, after a coworker asked how far along she was! After being offended, she realized she hadn't had AF for 4 months. She had always been irregular due to being overweight, so didn't think anything of it. Decided to test and got a BFP. Went into the Dr expecting to be about 4 mo, and found out she was 8. Baby was born 2 days after EDD and is very healthy.

It was delighted when I was invited to the shower, but was VERY shocked when the due date listed on the registry was 2 days after the day of the shower!

Some aren't as aware of their bodies. I, however, am always wondering what every twinge, cramp, or headache means. lol

  • One of my best friends from high school, his big brother was the boyfriend in this type of situation. The girlfriend was immensely overweight and made it the full 9 months without ever realizing she was pregnant. Went to the ER due to "stomach pain" and the doctors discovered she was giving birth. I can't imagine how that phone call went, but my friend said his parents were like OMG, we are grandparents!! and rushed to the hospital. The kid is adorable and turned out perfect despite never having any prenatal care and iffy lifestyle choices the mother was involved in.
  • I'm considerably overweight and pregnant again. I knew I was pregnant before the test told me I was, but that is just me. I know a girl whose third child was a complete surprise though. She didn't know she was pregnant or even show or have symptoms until 37 weeks and gave birth three days later. It's crazy how different every pregnancy is. Wishing the best fr both mommy and baby.
