Parenting after a Loss

Increasing tummy time

Abby hates being on her tummy.  I can maybe get 5 minutes from her before she states crying and screaming.

I've tried getting down with her and playing to extend it, but to no avail.  I'm worried she won't get enough time to develop her arm and neck muscles and that will delay her learning to crawl.

Anyone have some tips to try to extend her tummy time?

Ben HATED tummy time with a burning fiery passion! The only 2 ways we could get him to do tummy time was either wearing him (belly to belly) or laying down with him laying on either DH or me (again, belly to belly).  It exercises the same muscles as traditional floor tummy time, but it was the only way Ben tolerated it. GL and try not to worry- Abby will develop those muscles! :)

  • DD hated TT with a passion also. She probably got 5 mins a day total but started rolling on her own early despite lack of TT. I also had her do it on my chest as much as I could but she would either wail or fall asleep.
That's my other big problem.  She tends to fall asleep when I put her tummy-to-tummy.

  • Anne hates tummy time too. She is starting to like it more since I put a small pillow under her arms and I go down and play with her. I put some toys in front her to scoot towards. She doesn't stay there for very long though.

A little rolled up towel under DS's armpits helped us too. Now that he's bigger a boppy makes a good prop too. It was hard but I tried to let him be frustrated a little bit before I would pick him up. As he got stronger it would take longer for him to go from frustrated to done.

Now that he's rolling, he loves TT so much I can't get him to stay on his back to sleep!

Congratulations to the fabulous KGS2003! Her sweet boys are here! Grow boys grow!!!
  • We propped P on his tummy on the Boppy a lot at first to get him used to TT.  We also did a lot of TT on our chests.
  • Thanks ladies.  Surprisingly, we found a different way for her to enjoy tummy time.  Today, she saw the cat from a distance and started squirming towards her.  Apparently, it's all about the right motivation.
