Sippy straw with straw...recs needed

Hey ladies,

DS is almost 13 months and has been off of bottles for about 2 months now and taking all of his milk out of a sippy cup.  I would like to try one that includes a straw but all of the reviews I read seem to be pretty mixed on these as far as ease of getting the water out and leaks, etc.  Do any of you have one that you love and would recommend? Thanks so much!

Re: Sippy straw with straw...recs needed

  • My son was using the take and toss sippy cups and we found out that they have the same cups with straws so we got those.  They work really well especially because he still sometimes thinks that he has to tip it like a sippy cup but nothing leaks out when he does.  My son is 18 months.

  • i agree with PP, we have a take and toss straw cup and it's very easy to drink from but doesn't leak much. i like it because it also has a cover that slides over the straw bending it, so you can toss it in your bag without the straw getting dirty or leaking
Yours has a straw cover?  That would be nice, ours doesn't have that.  These are the ones we have. https://thefirstyears.com/take-toss-10oz-straw-cups-4-pack

  • I like the munchkin straw cup. We have had very few issues with leaking. We had one that the straw closed to prevent leaking, but she couldn't get it open and closed by herself so it was open all the time, therefore it was no longer leak proof.

I bought the munchkin ones and really like them. I should add that they do sometimes leak, but I've tried many brands and never found one that didn't leak. I like the munchkin because she can get almost all the liquid out and they are inexpensive.

  • We use the Nuby ones. They have a certain one that says on the package no spill and leak proof. The only place I can find them is Target and we love them. It's actually the only kind she will drink out of.

  • We use the Nuby straw cups and they work wonderfully! We haven't had any leaking issues with them either. And every liquid we've put in so far, he's been able to get out. I highly recommend them.
  • I like the CamelBak eddy water bottles and the munchkin ones.
  • This took a lot of trial and error, but I like the Nuby ones.  They are so exceptionally leakproof though that I find that my son was not getting anything out.  I tried to suck from it and it takes a lot of effort for even an adult so I'm not sure how any toddlers are even able to use them!  So I took a knife and made the hole a bit bigger that the liquid comes through and they work fine for him.  This makes it a bit less leakproof though.

  • We love the take n toss straw cups, that's what we first offer when starting water at 6 months. I don't think the leak-proof straw cups work the same as a regular straw cup, so I prefer the latter.

If you just want a water bottle for out and about, I do like Klean Kanteens and camel baks.
Ditto this.  I don't mind cups leaking because to me that means they aren't having trouble getting water out of it.  Take and toss are great for at time.  For out and about I just use a regular adult water bottle (or a bottled water) and they share with me.
  • I prefer the Zolibot ones because of the weighted straw. We also have Playtex and Lollacup. The lollacup straw is too wide and he gets to much at once and spits it out. The playtex is fine but the straw ends like an inch or more above the bottom which I don't like. All of the straw ones will leak if too much pressure builds up, Then you have to loosen the tops a little.

We have the same ones. My LO had a hard time with lollacup at first, but he adjusted. i like the wider straw for ease of cleaning, myself. Playtex are cheap, which is nice, and my LO likes them, but we tend to use those just for water as you really can't get a lot of the liquid out due to the straw length.
  • We have the Zoli Bot ones and they leak like crazy, but I do love the weighted straw!  The Nuby ones are the ones that seem to work best for us, but the straw does not move around so she can never get all the milk out of the cup.  Not the end of the world, just a minor issue.

  • We use the munchkin click tops and DD has figured out that if she tips it upside down and bangs the straw on the table, water will start flowing out like a river - we still use it, but it annoys me.  It's a straw cup though... they'll inevitably leak at some point.

We LOVE our thermos foogo straw cups though.  Rarely have leak issues (and it's usually from DD doing the same thing I described above).
  • Our Zolis never leak, unless the cap isn't on all the way? But I'm hesitant to use them for anything other than water. Those that use for milk, do you find it harder to clean ?

  • I'm hopping over from the Parenting board and thought I'd jump in. My DS is just over 12 months and I've found he does really well with the Tommie Tippee straw cups. They don't leak at all and are easy to clean.

  • We have one, Playtex I think, that I randomly got at Target on sale last year. It's one of the ones with Disney characters on it and it has a sliding cover that closes up over the straw. But it's one of the best straw cups we have for DD.

The only time we seem to have issues with it "leaking" is when DD is drinking it (and chewing on the straw) and decides to flick the straw out of her mouth, which winds up spraying water everywhere. But I think this is more an issue with DD than the cup!

DD took to drinking out of it really well. It was almost like one day she decided she knew how to drink out of a straw without much practice. Every now and then, she does forget that it's a straw cup and not a sippy, and will tilt it back to drink. But she's also learned quickly that shaking the cup with tell her if it's empty or not, so she shakes the cup and then realizes she was drinking wrong and corrects herself.
