Weaning- How Long Does Lactating Last?

My LO self weaned over the last few months until he just stopped asking to breastfeed altogether. It's been about two weeks since his last feeding and I still express a little milk if I try. I haven't tried pumping in that time (and last time I tried he hadn't nursed in two days, I was stressed out and couldn't let down, so it was unproductive).

I've heard from other moms that it takes "a few days" to dry up once you stop breastfeeding. Am I not understanding what "drying up" means? Is this normal? how long can I expect this to continue?

  • Echoing PP, it really varies. I was comfortable and could go without pads within a week. However, my body would still react to DD months several weeks after.

  • I could squeeze milk out a year after I weaned DS. Not a lot, but it was there.

  • DS is 19 months. I exclusively pumped until he was 6 months. If pushed on I still have what I call a "discharge". It's white, milkish looking, but not something I would consider lactating. It is also more abundant certain times of the month.
  • I weaned when my son was 11 months old. He is currently 16 months old and I leak occasionally and can get milk out if I try.

  • With both of mine I had no leaking afterwards at all.  However, I never tried to express milk.  I wouldn't worry if you're not leaking.
  • I could still get a bit of milk MONTHs after being done breast feeding the last two ties.  Just a little and it was a bit thick.  I couldn't have pumped a bottle but I could probably have begun nursing again if a baby had latched and kept trying.  I didn't like ti at all.  I used to have pierced nipples so I thought it was because of that.

  • I hadn't heard ANY of this before now, but it's nice to hear that what I'm seeing is normal. Thank you all for your replies. I feel better now!
