Driving post C-Section

Was anybody told (or not told) that you should wait "x" weeks before driving?

I was never told not to drive, and of course I haven't yet, but I need to go out today (3w3d pp), and wondering if its a good idea or not. My friend who had a c/s in June was told not to drive for 4 weeks... Is that typical? Has anybody driven sooner pp than that??

Re: Driving post C-Section

  • I feel like with DD I was told no sooner than 2 weeks, and at least 48 hours after the last time I took Percocet. With DS, I drove 8 days PP, and still 48 hours after the last Percocet. DS is 2.5 weeks old and I've since driven several times.

  • I was told to wait 2 weeks after both of my sections. I think you'd probably be fine, assuming you're off pain meds!

  • I was told as long as I didn't gave any narcotic in my system for 24 hours I could drive. I drove like a week after my c/s. I only took narcotics for like 2 days.
I hope you and your babies are doing well!

  • The only IRL story I've heard was a friend who had a hard labor before ending with a c/s. She couldn't drive until 6 weeks PP, when her OB approved starting up a normal routine slowly.

  • In the UK I believe the law is that you cannot drive for six weeks after a C/S. I would double check just to make sure there is no law in Canada.

In the US my OBGYN recommended not driving for two weeks or while I was taking my pain meds.

  • 2 weeks was what they told me at first. When I went for my 2 week check up they said to slam on the brakes in the driveway and if that didn't kill me I could drive lol.

  • I was told 2 weeks but it's been 4 and DH had driven everywhere so I haven't needed to yet.

  • I was told 2 weeks or later if still taking Percocet. I was off Percocet before 2 weeks but the weather was so bad here that I didn't really have anywhere to go after the 2 weeks were up. I drove at 3 weeks for the first time.

  • 2 weeks and I had a classical cs. I couldn't wait to drive, I wanted to go places so badly. I drive a standard so I took it really easy the first few weeks after I started driving.
  • I was told 1 week.

  • They told me 2 weeks as well. With my last one I can't even remember if they said a certain time. I haven't been on anything except ibuprofen since the initial morphine. With my last one I was driving about a week later. I'm sure it will be similar with this one as I have something planned with a few girlfriends on Saturday. I have recovered very quickly so I'm comfortable driving, even right now if I had to.

  • I'm in Canada and wasn't told anything. They didn't give me narcotic painkillers at all (not even in the hospital unless T3s count) so that was a non issue. I probably drove after 2 weeks, but I had a pretty easy recovery.

  • Last time I was told 3 weeks, this time I was told 2 (different doctors).  But I've always been told it's based on how you are getting around and that you haven't' had the narcotics 48 hours before driving.

  • The first time around, my doctor told me usually not before 2 weeks….and "when you can be safe for yourself, your passengers, and others on the road". You are a mom so you will be a good judge with your precious cargo. But I was totally fine to drive after 2 weeks. Basically, can you extend & lift your legs comfortably, twist to check blindspots, and withstand the carseat on your incision. My SIL was required to wait the entire 6 weeks!! I felt so bad for her…although I have to say that if I were her I probably would have driven after 3.

Thanks ladies! @kvochka, I also drive a standard and was most concerned about that. I'm headed out now, wish me luck!!
