Preemies

Anyone else tired of this?

Every time my DH or I take our son out in public we are asked how old he is and it's ALWAYS followed up with, "Oh, he's so tiny!"  He was born six weeks premature at 4lb, 9oz so to us, he's huge!  Do you divulge to strangers that your DC was born premature?  Part of me feels the need to explain, but another part knows that it's none of their business!

  • We got sick of that too so we just tell them his adjusted age.? :)?

  • Ha! Ha! This happened to us a lot. Then one day we were out and someone asked how old she was. We told them and her response was, "Wow! She is really big for her age."

That was the day that we knew she was caught up. We still get either she is so tiny or she is really huge comments.

Just take it with a grain of salt. If you feel like sharing your story, talk away. If not, then just leave it at that. "Yeah, she really is our small bundle of joy."

    Katie: 1/16/08 2lbs. 15oz.
    Abby & Emily: 12/31/10 6lbs. 2oz. & 5lbs. 7oz.
  • DS is small even for his adjusted age so I tell people his actual age but follow up with the fact that he was born prematurely because I know they will say something.
  • Same thing as pp...we just tell them his adjusted age. ?It's funny, though, b/c when we do that, people tell us he's so big! I just got so tired of explaining everything... it's just easier that way.
  • We don't really get this so much anymore, but up until 2 months we did. At 4 months, he was 12 lbs 1 ounce, so people tend to believe. He was only 7 weeks early but 4 pounds 10 ounces, but I can see how people with really teenie tiny ones can be tired of it.
  • If people look at me funny, I explain the prematurity. Developmentally he is pretty much caught up so I don't use his adjusted age. He is small even for his adjusted age, though, so if I say he is 5 1/2 months, I get lots of confused and worried looks.

The funniest comment I got was when someone asked how big he was at birth and I said 3 lb, 2oz they said "Really?! It looked like he was going to be really big!" Tongue Tied

I love the name Nolan, by the way!

  • I would tell them that he was a preemie & they usually didn't have much to say after that. (We have a Nolan too!)

  • I got that for a while. I used it as a "teachable moment" to tell people that preemies can happen to anyone. Besides, people need to stop commenting on how people look, even babies. It's rude!
  • People ask how old he is, I say "He's 8 months old" I haven't gotten the "Wow, he's so tiny!" comments since he was about 4 months old, and he's still only like 10th percentile for his adjusted age.

I can't imagine telling people he is his adjusted age! It just doesn't make sense to me! Is it really so hard to say "He was a preemie" or, my favorite, "You think this is small? He was only 2 lbs at birth!"

I'm proud of my boy and I'm proud of my DH and I... we've had a rough, rough year and come through it alive, together and happy. There isn't much more I can ask for. We keep getting curve balls and we keep hitting them out of the park.

Someone commenting that my baby seems tiny doesn't even cause a blip on my radar.

  • I dont know, Auntie.. I've gotten a few disapproving looks when I tell his actual age. Like I'm starving him or something. People are weird.

I always give his real age. Depending on what kind of mood I'm in, I explain or I don't.

Sometimes I just get tired of being asked, so I just give his age and walk away letting them gawk.

Of course, I did that once in the GI doc's office and the woman right away said "oh.. we know how it is.. this one (nodding to her granddaughter) was 10 weeks early.."

  • I get this when I am in the store buying clothes for DD. She is in 3-6 but is 9 mths old. The cashier always ask me if I got the right size. Um yeah I am pretty sure I know my daughter's size. TYVM
  • We get this pretty frequently but it usually doesn't bother me.  In fact, I'm so proud of the progress she's made that I usually proudly tell them that she was a preemie.  I'm all for increasing awareness, before DD I knew very little about preemies so I want people to know you can be a preemie and turn out healthy and beautiful.
  • I guess I never really thought of it as spreading awareness of prematurity, which is probably the better way to think of it!  I usually only tend to feel the need to explain when "he's so tiny" is accompanied with disapproving or odd looks.  Thanks for the input!  Smile
