VSD diagnosis?

Has anyone else dealt with a vsd diagnosis? My doctor wouldn't really say if we should be worried or not since it is still early. Really just told to wait and see. Has anyone else gone through this? Should I be freaking out? Any advice?

I had to Google what that was. Are you referring to the heart condition? Were you or the baby diagnosed with it?

  • I'm actually going in for a fetal echo next Tuesday, but for routine high risk screening, not because they found something at my A/S. Did they offer this to you, or an MFM F/U?

  • We went in for an ultrasound with a perinatologist last Wednesday. We had a still birth last year so this pregnancy is considered high-risk. When they took a close look at the babies heart they found what they thought was VSD (ventricular septal defect- a hole in the wall dividing the left and right ventricles). Apparently it is the most common heart defect in babies. I'm almost 20 weeks along so there is still time for the heart to develop. I'm being told that it is something that can just fix itself during the pregnancy as the heart grows larger, it can fix itself after birth in the first year, people live the whole lives with it without issues, or it can be a major problem requiring surgery or worse. Kind of a wide range of possibilities. They have me going back in for a fetal echo in 2 weeks. I just don't know how often this turns into a major issue.

My foramen ovale never completely closed. I've been asymptomatic my whole life and it was just discovered a few years ago (I'm now 30) when I went to the cardiologist for an unrelated issue. It's very small and has never given me a problem so there's always a chance it will cause no issues. FX that you get some good news and everything is ok!
  • I do birth defects research and I can tell you it's incredibly common in terms of a malformation. Most VSD's close on their own, though sometimes they do require surgery. They will also do a postnatal echo which often times finds that it wasn't a VSD at all. You will probably see a pediatric cardiologist for follow up but it may just require monitoring.
