Pregnant after 35

late in having harmony test?

my sequential screening bloodwork came back with a 1:250 risk of downs and as a result it was suggested i meet with a genetic counselor who basically scared the crap out of me. this was at 18 weeks.  she was doing her normal job, they told me there wasn't anything too concerning about my results (the nuchal test (?) earlier was fine) but it still scared me. she suggested i do the harmony test, since insurance would now pay for it since i was "at risk", i did it and am now waiting on results -i go back this week for the results and my full anatomy scan (20 weeks).

other women i have talked to  or things I have read about this, seem to have had type of testing this done and overwith way before the 20 week mark. is this normally when things these type of results are discussed? is this a normal timeframe?  i feel like im pressed for time now in terms of decision making, amnio etc.

thanks!

Re: late in having harmony test?

  • I had my testing done at 20 weeks when they did the anatomy scan. I was told that was the norm by my doctor, MFM specialist, and the genetic counselor.

  • I have a rare neurological disease that results in severe disability and death. Half of my dads side of the family has this. My LO has a 50/50 chance of inheriting it from me. It's not a disease that physically hurts and people don't die from it until middle age or early elderly years. I'm 36 and have had symptoms for 9 years.

I had to talk to a genetic counselor once years ago at my research hospital. By nature those talks are scary.

I wouldn't even blink at 1/250 odds. Imagine 250 people lined up and just one of them is different. Those are actually great odds that there's nothing abnormal. I would go ahead and get a harmony test, but don't let anyone freak you out unnecessarily.
  • I have no information just thoughts and prayers for you and your lo

  • I had the MaterniT21 (similar to Harmony) test done at week 10, but I don't think it is uncommon for the the tests to be done later after the NT scan, Quad screening or the anatomy scan provides odds or indicates soft makers of some type that warrants having a more definitive test done.  I'm sorry you have this worry on you, but I hope Friday's appointment clears it all up.  Best of luck.

  • thanks for the thoughts and advice. all came back well thankfully. i know the genetic counselors are just doing their job and reciting their routine but it can definitely sound scary - no matter how good or bad your odds are.
    good luck to you guys
  • Glad you received good results!
