Positioning of baby

FTM here with a c section. Baby is officially 24 hours old now, and the thing I'm struggling with is how to hold him. I've been doing the football position, but I can't seem to do it without a nurses help. I'm hoping my struggle is simply because of the pain from the c section and it will get better, but I'm not sure. Any advice to help get the right position? I've tried a nippy and pillows but can't seem to get them on my own!

Re: Positioning of baby

  • Basically you just have to keep on practicing, you'll get it!! Tummy to mommy with baby lying across always worked better for me, rather than football. Some mama's even do side-lying but that didn't work for me till he was older (like 3m). Your struggles are normal and we've all been there- hang in there, practice makes perfect :)

  • A boppy isn't thick enough for me. All along I have had the best luck sitting in the corner of the couch either cross cross or with a foot stool, with a blanket folded under the boppy with the arm rest for one arm and another pillow for the other arm. I also use the cross-cradle hold (especially easily on).

  • Thanks ladies. I hve actually been successful with the football position twice since my post! It's very refreshing to have a successful feeding. I will def keep these ideas in mind for the future
  • I had a c/s and had to do football for a while. Hopefully you will feel better in a couple weeks and you can try different positions.

  • I did cross cradle after both of my CS. Just make sure to use pillows over your lap. The skin to skin you get with that position is much better than the football hold. GL!

  • Glad you found one that is working - football is also my favorite hold even 4 mo later! It will get easier to experiment with holds if you just keep practicing. Goo luck! :)

  • I did cross cradle after my c/s. I just couldn't get in the right spot with football without the nurse/LC's help. The boppy never worked for me.. I use a regular memory foam type pillow with my foot propped up a little on the side she's eating.
