Tips to create more milk with baby #2?

I am expecting baby #2 in August. My DS wouldn't latch no matter how many doctors, nurses & lactation specialists tried to help. I decided to pump but I couldn't make enough milk & so after 5 weeks of pumping only to supplement with formula I reluctantly gave up on pumping. I tried increasing my calorie intake, drinking even more water, Mothers Milk tea & Fenugreek. Still I couldn't produce more than a few ounces. Is there anything I can do during pregnancy to increase production??

  • I started pumping right away in the hospital. The lactation specialist and nurses suggested it after failing to get my DS to latch. I pumped every 2-3 hours for weeks but still couldn't produce enough.
  • I agree with above poster. In addition, try to make sure you nurse until your breasts are empty. Were you exclusively pumping?

  • Yes but I tired to get him to latch before pumping. He simply could not latch.
  • Don't forget that every baby is different too! I had a terrible time bf with my first and after a month of extreme pain, nipple trauma and low milk supply gave up. Nursing with my second however has gone great, not a single problem.

  • Hi- I had the same problem with ds he just wouldn't latch so day 3 at home I pumped every 2 hours at home on the dot and has to supplement for a couple weeks. I would only get about 3 ounces every 2 hours but I drank water tons and tons and was able to ep for 1 year. Now with dd we had some difficulty with latch but we stuck with it and at 6 weeks now she nurses beautifully and I'm able to pump about 4 ounces after out morning feed. Just stick with it I was nervous too but she is so different then my son! Good luck!!
  • Were/are you able to do things at birth such as immediate skin to skin contact? My childbirth instructor blamed some latch issues on agreesive suctioning of baby's mouth at birth (don't know if there's any research to back it, but might be worth looking into). I hope you have a more positive experience this time.

  • Talk to an LC, maybe a nipple shield might help, temporarily? It was a day and a half before I could even hold DS, as he was transferred to a NICU at a different hospital shortly after birth, and the first few attempts at nursing were a mess until I was able to meet with an LC the following day. I used a nipple shield at first, which helped my son get the idea of what he needed to do. Although hopefully you'll talk to an LC who will mention that the nipple shield should just be temporarily and try to help you wean off of it quickly. Mine forgot to mention that! But it might help in the very beginning.

  • Thank you everyone! I did try a nipple shield as well and it didn't help but every baby is different & I'm going to give it 200% this time around!! Thanks for the support.
  • Sounds exactly like what happened to me. I'm hoping to do better this time around too. However, I'm pretty sure I had PPD and mastitis, although I didn't realize either at the time. Any way to prevent mastitis from reoccurring?
