Dropping a Nap

How long did it take for your kids to adjust going from two naps to one? We made the switch about 2 weeks ago and it's still not going great. His nap lengths are all over the place, he can't always stay awake until his nap, and he has a hard time going down many days. Just curious how long it took others to adjust.

Re: Dropping a Nap

  • It took us probably a month. Some days were one nap, others were two, and some were one with a quick catnap an hour or so before bed. It was much harder and longer than the transition from three to two naps. It did get better as time went on so if you are already two weeks in it should start getting better (at least based on my experience of just one child).

  • It sounds like your LO still needs the second nap. Any reason why you are forcing it? Usually if they are ready its not a huge struggle. I've heard of people in the middle stages shortening the morning nap instead for a while and that working out better. Have you given something like that a shot instead? If you LO needs two naps they may not adjust well to just one no matter how much you force it and end up just overtired and sleep deprived...

He was showing many of the signs of being ready to go to one nap. His naps were only 30-45 minutes and he had always taken hour and a half naps. He would fight going down for his naps, and never seemed tired at nap time. I feel like he's not ready for one nap but he won't take two if that makes sense.

  • I watched for their cues. Stretched the first one out about 30 minutes later than their usual time to go down. I did a few weeks of just putting them in their cribs at the second nap time (mine always napped better in the morning) so the afternoon nap/crib time was more a mental break for me. They just played in their cribs and would sometimes nap for 30 mins. As PP said maybe your LO isn't ready yet.

  • I'd say we teetered between 1 and 2 naps for a good month before it was just down to 1 nap.
