Update: Surgery for LO

The pedi thinks lo has a ingiunal hernia. It's a small hole in his abdomen that didn't full close. It's apparently the most common surgery for infant boys but I'm still nervous. I was wondering if any other moms that have gone through surgery could ease my fears of general anesthesia. We see a urology specialist next week to see if surgery is necessary

Update:  We saw the specialist and he said that he didn't think it was a hernia and that we should just keep an eye on it!  Thanks ladies for the thoughts and prayers, they seemed to have worked!

Re: Update: Surgery for LO

  • My daughter has an umbilical hernia; not sure of the difference in your LOs. Pedi says it's common & should close on its own within the 1st year hopefully. I think getting a 2nd opinion is a great idea, especially from a specialist. Whatever you decide, good luck! T & P are with you!

Thank you, from my research the umbilical hernia can heal on it's own but ingiunal will need surgery.  I'm crossing my fingers that it's not a hernia and just some fluid build up that will go away, but the pedi was fairly confident that it is a hernia.  We're going to meet with the urologist and I take a little comfort in that were close to one of the best children's hospitals so I at least know if he does need surgery he's going to be in the hands of people that do this consistently.  I just see him getting so smart and I'm just scared that this procedures going to change him.  Google is not my friend right now.
  • I posted something similar last week.

LO's doctor referred us to a surgeon in our area who agreed that he would need surgery in the very near future. This particular surgeon has terrible reviews, so we are going to make some calls tomorrow to see if we can meet with a pediatric surgeon at a children's hospital. I am terrified of LO having to be under anesthesia!

  • My little girl went through surgery and general anesthesia. It's scary for sure but just have to trust the people that are treating her and doing the operation. They take sooo many precautions when doing surgery on babies. Typically they use a pediatric anesthesiologist - you can ask for one too but I'm going to guess they will already be using one. Ours was so specialized - a pediatric cardiology anesthesiologist. Just make sure you're comfortable with the doctors and hospital and then trust that it'll be ok. They know what they are doing and like you said it's a pretty common procedure.
  • Nothing to add here, just wanted to send you and your LO lots of T&P.  It's going to be very scary for you guys, but your LO is so much stronger than you realise!  He'll do great!
  • I don't know much. But you guys are in my thoughts and prayers.
  • My LO had laparoscopic surgery for pyloric stenosis at 17 days old.  We were also concerned with our LO having general anesthesia, since he was in the NICU for respiratory distress and meconium aspiration. Everyone at the pediatric hospital eased our minds and concerns throughout his stay from the ER nurses, OR / recovery nurses and physicians were all great. My LO did great and was such a little trooper. My DH and I say it seemed much harder on us than LO. Like PP mentioned find a physician and facility you're comfortable with. Sending many T&PS.

I'll be praying hun. Ds1 was quite a bit older when he went under (18 months) but it was still scary. We chose the best children's hospital and had a good experience. Remember, you can get second opinions and if for any reason you're uncomfortable with the staff, speak up. Ask for someone different, go to a different hospital. Be a strong advocate for you and your baby.
  • Good luck! Prayers heading your way!

  • My LO has had surgery twice. He did fine. They wait till the OR to give him gas to put him to sleep. Then his IV. Then general started. He's woken up rough both times but that is because of poor pain management. Good luck

  • I have a tough time with general anesthesia myself so I understand your concern for your LO. Good luck with the specialist.

  • Thanks ladies for all the T&Ps, we are going to a Children's hospital so I know that the anesthesiologists will know how to handle everything.  I just know I'm going to be wreck, but I can't expect any mother not to be.  H is coming with me to the appt to make sure we both get all questions answered.
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this, even with a common surgery it still has to be really hard not to worry. Thoughts and prayers to all of you, and hugs! Keep us posted
  • :-( so sorry to hear the news. I will pray for a quick recovery! Hang in there!

@Tally879 if you need someone to keep talking to about it, or want to talk about it closer to the appointment dates or possible operation date, feel free to PM me. I know I am going to stress over my little guy.

    Edit for wrong tag.

Thank you, same goes to you, it does help to know what other people are hearing from their doctors, so I'll PM you when we hear from our doctor about what they recommend
  • I have not had to experience this or a surgery for my LO but I just wanted to say GL and I hope you get information that eases your mind a bit. I cannot imagine having to face any type of surgery for my DD.
