December 2013 Moms

Formula moms

I've been considering the decision to stop nursing bc my daughter has been in the hospital practically the whole first month of her life and I've only been able to nurse off and on. I've been pumping a lot which isn't working for me bc I hardly get any milk and have been ending up with clogged ducts. My question is how did you dry up your milk-was it very painful???

Re: Formula moms

  • I just stopped pumping. I was only getting 1/2 to 2 ounces per session once or twice a day. It took about a week with some tingling and leaks, but bit wasn't too bad.

  • Yes extremely painful. It took almost 2 weeks to completely stop leaking. The first day of engorment was the worst. I took Motrin and took got hot showers to relieve the pain. I've also heard placing cold iceberg lettuce on your breast also help with the pain. Good luck!
  • I didn't get engorged because my problem is almost no supply, but you can take sudafed. Or put cabbage leaves in your bra, but obviously sudafed is easier.

  • I did it really slow over the course of a week and a half about. I was on producing less than an oz in my right breast and at times I couldn't even fill the bottom of the bottle from my left side. I went from pumping ever 2, to 4, then 6,8 and finally 10 hrs. Once I hit that point I just stopped and that was a few days ago. I have not felt that uncomfortable since I stopped and I barely leak but I do still where the pads for now just in case. I was so afraid of having a clogged duct that's why it took me so long and I was still sad that I couldn't produce any substantial amount of milk so the process helped me through it. ( doing it slowly )

I have the same problem-my right side I can't pump more than an ounce but if I don't nurse my LO ill still get clogged ducts-I'm sick of being in pain and being stressed!! I think switching slowly is the best approach..
  • I leaked for quite some time, but it wasn't painful...but I never produced enough milk to be engorged really. I quit cold turkey and took sudafed per my doctor's suggestion.

  • My milk never really came in.  I never pumped more than a 1 ounce out of both breasts for 2 weeks.  I was tingly and was somewhat sore but it was nothing unbearable--probably because I didn't really have a supply to dry up.  The leaking and tingles went away after 1-2 weeks.
