Where do you like to go for family outings?

What kinds of places do you and your SO like to take your LO(s) for family outings? We take LO lots of different places, but I am always looking for new ideas.

One place we haven't been yet is the art museum. Anyone gone to one yet, and if so, how did LO like it?

Re: Where do you like to go for family outings?

  • We go to public swimming. Our LO loves the water.

  • We walk around the mall a lot, go out for frozen yogurt, bring him to a local brewery sometimes and watch daddy (and mommy) drink samples. When it was nicer we walked around our development.

We are going away next week and I can't wait to take him to a petting zoo!

We have done the zoo but didn't do the petting part yet. LO loves watching the animals. I bet you guys will have a great time!

Outdoor or indoor? We are thinking of joining our neighborhood pool for the summer, but I need to check if they allow babies in swim diapers.
  • We went to an art museum but she was younger - like 2 mos - so she slept the whole time! It would be different now!

  • We are out and about a ton, mainly because of DS1 and the four year old I watch. Science museum, train museum, ymca for swimming or gymnastics, library for story time, music class, hikes, parks when it's nice out, etc. We do all variations of those things on the weekend too as a family. Sometimes we take the commuter rail train two towns north and meet a cousin for lunch on the weekend because DS1 loves trains!

  • story time, gym time, mall mostly. When the weathers nicer we walk around our neighborhood, go into downtown, and go to our neighborhoods pool. We've taken her to a lot of places- but since it's so crappy out we mostly stay inside, or do the 3 things above. I'm really looking forward to when it gets nicer out and we can take her to the zoo. We have a bunch around us.

  • My DS is 4, so our outings are mainly centered around him.  We're in (near) Chicago, so dead of winter right now.  We like to frequent . ..
    Library--many have baby story hours.
Barnes and Noble-also has a story hour, DS like the train table
Botanic Garden-we go even in the winter to the greenhouses
Gym-ours has great daycare and open swim.  We did swimming lessons with DS when he was about 8 months old.
Target-my favorite place when DS was a baby.  We'd just wander.  Now with 2 kids . ..  not so much fun.

  • We go on lots of walks, we have started biking now that I got a bike with a seat in the back for ds, we go to the beach everyday, the usual errands and a few hikes.

  • We go on walks, we shop... A LOT, and we just started a music class. LO loves it!
  • We start swimming lessons tomorrow, the mall, out for lunch, a friend and I are going to start walking at an indoor track, Babytime at the library. We took her once to the science center and she loved it for the most part.

Okay, I'm obviously behind. I didn't think she was old enough to enjoy the zoo or aquarium. I know what we're doing next weekend!
We go grocery shopping, out to dinner, MH is obsessed with autozone and best buy so she is there a lot.

Oh LO loves it; we've been taking him to the zoo since around 3 months and the aquarium shortly after that. He loves people watching and looking at the animals. I think you guys will definitely enjoy that.

Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies! I definitely saw a few new ideas. I definitely want to try the library; that seems like a big hit based on the number of replies mentioning it.

I never mentioned where we go in my OP. We have been to the zoo and aquarium a few times, botanical gardens (our personal favorite, LO and I went once a week when it was nice, once a month now), natural history museum, science museum, some parks, and many shopping trips. We also did a pumpkin patch, but that's more of a once a year type of thing.

@Nix55 Where did you find the music class?

ETA: I found a couple in our area, and one actually has weekend times so that those of us who aren't SAHM can go! What did you do at your music class? The ones I found have descriptions which sound pretty similar to each other, but I would love to hear about someone's real life experiences.

@KellenHi21 - how do you work the biking?  I'd read that most babies should wait until 1 year to be holding their big noggins up with helmets on - but I'd love to hear that that's old school thinking!  I can't wait to go biking with LO!!  What sort of seat did you get and how do yo like it?

Its great! I read that too so I asked my pedi when we went for our 6 month check up. we found a helmet that fits him perfectly and he is fine sitting up unassisted with the helmet on... the pedi said as long as he can support himself and the helmet for an extended period of time that it was ok. so we wore the helmet around the house for a while before going on the bike. we also don't go on long rides. but he loves it and its working out great! I actually don't know what kind of seat we got... dh got it and i haven't checked... next time I take it out i'll take a look!
