Sleep deprivation

So, DS is still waking up every 2 hours to eat. He is also really gassy which causes him to wake up a lot. I'm exhausted and have realized I don't handle loss of sleep well. I know there are lots of us who are feeling the loss of sleep. How are you handling it ?

Re: Sleep deprivation

  • You are describing my little guy exactly. I'm not going to lie, I cry a lot. For me, I have just had people who will hold him for an hour or so throughout the day so I can power nap. Also, I do a lot of skin to skin with him and sleep while doing that.
Good luck and I feel you!

  • It's hard. But I just try to sleep during the day if I can. I'm also telling myself repeatedly this won't last forever. I'm also not stressing about housework, laundry, etc. I'm trying to rest as much as I can. Maybe your pedi would have some suggestions around the gassiness. I know with DS mine told me to try mylicon before feeding vs after. I second pp saying lay with the baby on your chest. That can ease some of their tummy aches too.

  • Nap when he naps during the day.  Go to bed as early as you can.  If he falls asleep for a couple of hours after a 7PM feeding, that is two more hours of sleep you could be getting.

  • You do adapt eventually. I used to feel like I would die on the amounts of sleep that I thrive on.

  • The first two weeks were really hard but I've adapted like PPs have said. I sleep as often as I can when she sleeps which is hard with my stepdaughter here. I also hand DD over to DH after her evening feeding so I can take a nap. I'm beginning to be more awake at night and then I'm sure she'll change things up on us.

  • With DS1, I just learned to cope. You sleep when baby sleeps and everything else dishes, laundry, cleaning, are forgotten. Also, take all the extra help you can get. I had my mom and MIL stay for a week. They took DS1 in the morning and I slept another 1-2 hours.
  • I cried a lot too. Finally i Took one day where I did absolutely nothing but sleep when he slept, all day, and ate bites here and there. It was a boring, wasted day to me. The next day I had my mom help most of the day. I feel like that's when I finally got ahead of it.

Tomorrow LO is 3 weeks and I've felt pretty fantastic all weekend. ... of course this could all change again tomorrow.

Hugs. Its hard. I have never been that tired in my life.

I think I have been stubborn and have refused help. DH has offered to take over so I can nap, but then I feel bad because he doesn't nap. DS wakes up every 2 hours to eat, so I need to figure out a way to sneak a nap in. I would love it if he would sleep longer between feedings, but it is what it is.

  • I feel you on this, it's rough. Last night was one of Noah's toughest nights. I think his tummy was upset so he literally slept for thirty minute intervals.

I agree with PPs. Sleep when you can. I just woke up from a nap. My body seems to have started adjusting to sleeping in one to two hour increments. Just keep reminding yourself it will get better!

  • Just to echo some of the advice you've already been given, let go of any aspirations to get shit done. The laundry can pile up, the dishes can wait in the sink. If baby's sleeping, you sleep, too. Even an hour of shut-eye can really improve your mood and make you feel less like a zombie.

  • I sleep when he does, basically napping all day. I do nothing around the house. I'm in total survival mode most days (at 4 weeks).

DH takes care of the essentials and takes over when he gets home from work. He also takes LO overnight into the guest room/nursery once a week so I can peacefully sleep- just wish I didn't have to wake up to pump (I EP). Those nights are lifesavers.

It's still really hard but slowly is getting easier! Hang in there!

  • DH has been reminding me to sleep when DS does. He's been absolutely great at encouraging me and has told me my only job is take care of DS. He'll do the house stuff or he'll learn to deal with it not being in tip top shape all the time.

  • We're still new to this - DD is only four days old - but I've slept about three hours a night since I went in for my induction. Sleeping when the baby sleeps is really what I'm living by at this point, but H has been such a big help. I'm also trying to not put so much pressure on myself to keep my entire house clean, laundry completely done etc., which is also exhausting. Hang in there!!

Thank you for this post OP. Makes me feel like I am not alone. I try to nap when I can but most of the time I feel like a total zombie :(. DH is great at helping but now he's back to work so I don't want to make him get up at night when he works. I hope this gets easier!
I let go of feeling bad for DH waking up nights. He wants to help, he wants to bond with baby. We both knew having a newborn would be hard, it's just hard on mommy and daddy in different ways. I hope this outlook helps you - DH and I are supporting one another through this rough patch and recognize each other's contributions. I feel like I can see the light at the end of the tunnel (but it's a looooooooong tunnel!)  :)

  • My LO sleeps all day except for feeding time. Then he stays awake practically all night. I am so tired, I don't even now how I'm functioning right now.

  • I was about to post a question about this. DD eats every 1-2 hours and I feel like I'm losing my mind. Just makes me realize I had an easy first baby. DS ate every 3-4 hours. Its only for a short time has become my mantra.
