Oatmeal

What kind do you feed your LO? Is there a healthy kind of instant oatmeal?

Re: Oatmeal

  • I use old fashioned oats mixed with milk, zap in the microwave for 90 seconds, and add natural applesauce and cinnamon. Super healthy. Easy peasy.

I use old fashioned oats and microwave as well.  It cooks up really fast.  Directions for microwaving are right on the container.

  • The reason I ask about instant is that I wanted to use it in a hotel room, which doesn't have a microwave but I can get hot water from the coffee maker.  Does that make a difference in using rolled oats vs. instant?

  • I do regular steel oats via stove top with cinnamon, milk, sometimes with nutmeg and a bayleaf in it. I make enough for 2 or 3 days

does the hotel have a microwave anywhere you can use? If so i would bring a huge deep bowl to cook it in via microwave

  • @piffle42 I've given her quaker instant the last few days since the weather was bad, we had no food in the house and I dug it out of the back of the pantry.  It just seems (at least the flavor I had) that it was really sweet.  Now that I'm actually buying oatmeal to feed her with I wanted to see what others were using.
  • I just bought 5 lbs of instant oatmeal from the bulk bin today (it was on sale for $0.49/lb). I eat it for breakfast every morning. I've been feeding DS multigrain cereal. Maybe I'll try instant with him.

  • So how do you do these oatmeal muffins? Do you add extra liquid to keep it from being super dry?

  • We do a batch of McCann's once/week and then reheat it with a little water in the morning and add peanut butter and banana.

  • @angelacz87 that's what I do too. But I think in the long run it'll be cheaper to do it with the muffins. Buying bulk and all that.

  • Yeah, Costco is freaking awesome. Except my house prohibits that much buying in bulk. LOL

  • Coming back to say...wow! who knew oatmeal the oatmeal thread will grow this long.

I ended up buying some store brand quick oats and it's what I've been making for DD at home, but am probably just going to grab some kind of fruit packet instant oatmel for the trip just to save myself hassle in the mornings.
