My doula is a prenatal yoga instructor. But I also looked on Dona.org where the certified doulas are in your area. There's a few per city and state. Also most birth centers have doulas, that was going to be my back up plan.
I googled doulas in my area. We met with two doulas to see how we felt about them and if we would mesh well together. The doula I chose had a blog as part of her website. It was nice to read her comments, birth experience, how she dealt with MS etc. Based on her blog I felt like I knew her to some degree and set up a meeting. When we met my H liked her as well and we got good vibes from her. She ended up being amazing in our birth and we will use her again.
i am a doula and most of my clients find me these ways:
- they are my HypnoBirthing students
- www.DoulaMatch.net (lots of doulas are on DONA.com, but only if they are DONA certified. there are many other certifying bodies and Doula Match shows them all)
- google
- yelp
- referred from local birth professionals (midwives, OBs, fertility acupuncturists, chiropractors, etc.)
HTH!

I looked at dona, doulamatch, and google search results for my area. I wasn't really concerned about dona certification - the one I hired is dona-trained, but not certified. We interviewed the 3 we liked the look of best, who were in our price range, and just picked the one we felt most at home with.
