XP: TTC question

Hi, I'm lurking from a TTC board...

Wanted to ask all you runners and athletic ladies if your OB or RE suggested cutting back on exercise while TTC?

With so much emphasis on staying healthy and lean when TTC, I kind of ignored my acupuncturist's suggestion to scale down my workouts a little. My BMI and body fat % are right in the middle (not on the low end) of healthy range. And I've never missed a period in my life. Yes, I work out regularly, but I'm definitely no ultramarathon runner or Olympic gymnast.

However, in doing a basic Google search, I found a couple studies that may prove me wrong (ie. jogging only 12-18 miles/week can cause fertility probs), and I'm just wondering what others had been told?

Re: XP: TTC question

  • I wasn't told anything - but I also didn't have any difficulty conceiving, so I never consulted an OB or RE about getting pregnant.

In theory, there really shouldn't be any correlation between "normal" working out and TTC.  (As you pointed out, activities which can severely impact body fat and cause amenorrhea are the obvious exception to that).

Every person's situation is different, but again, given a normal baseline, with no other underlying issues, the intensity/frequency of a workout shouldn't have any impact on the ability to get or maintain a pregnancy.  There are many of us on this board (myself included) who got pregnant while training for a half or full marathon, which means our mileage was probably greater than 12-18 miles per week while we were trying to get pregnant.

  • Nope!  My OB encouraged me to keep up my level of activity- running and weight lifting, as long as I felt comfortable.  He said the only study he has seen that showed any effect of exercise on pregnancy was that babies of mothers who exercised tend to have a lower birth weight, but it is still in the average range.

Keep in mind they will not want you to add in strenuous activity once you get pregnant if it is not already a part of your life.  Good luck!
  • Lurking, I was an endurance runner. My RE and acupuncturist also told me to cut back to 45 min a day and keep HR less then 140. I did for about 6 months prior to getting my BFP. Good luck

  • I also gained a couple pounds cutting back but my RE also wanted me to gain 5 lbs.
