Do I need a baby swing?

Is a baby swing necessary?

Re: Do I need a baby swing?

  • Nope.  C hated hers.  However, I do know babies that love them.  You certainly don't need one, but if you want one, I'd buy it secondhand.

  • Loved ours!!!!
  • We found it extremely useful. It seems to be one of those hit or miss items. Always a hit with babies in my family though. If budget is an issue, I agree, second hand.

  • Both my boys loved theirs. Im definitely getting one this time too! Its all preference for you and your LO.
  • We borrowed one from a friend for DS. He loved it, so I think we''ll buy one for this LO.

  • Never had one, never felt like we needed one. Babies have too much stuff that they don't need already, no need to add to it.
Also - a lot of people I know really created dependencies on them and had issues transitioning out of it.
    To each their own.
  • It was a necessity in our house. I would definately buy used since they can be hit miss. We needed it for our sanity.

  • this is one of those buy it second hand or get it as a gift type things. some babies hate them, some love them. both times I've gotten 2nd hand swings from friends.
  • We really needed it. Only way she'd sleep for the first 3 mo. I wish we had bought it second hand, tho.
  • Yes. Get it on sale.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • It depends.

I didn't think we needed one for DS.  So, we didn't get one.  Then, when he was about 4 weeks old, we realized that when we would swing him in his car seat, he'd stop crying.  So, we bought a swing.  He loved it for about 2 weeks, then hated it again.

I'm hoping this baby likes it so I can at least feel like I got my money's worth!

  • For me personally, absolutely not. I worked in early childhood for many years and saw far too many children completely reliant on the swing. Meaning the only way they would sleep was in a swing (which we can't allow in a daycare as it's against state regs). It would always be a nightmare. I get it mommies get tired and if the swing works you do it. But I didn't wanna get in the habit so we never bought one. I never for a second thought damn we should have gotten a swing. DD was in a jumperoo at 4 weeks old that may be why there was never a need.

But no a swing isn't necessary.

We would not have survived without a swing for DS. It was the ONLY time we could put him down without him screaming his head off. DD liked her's, too. We need a new one this time because DD burned the motor out in our old one. It was useful enough to us that I have no problems buying one.

    Edit: autocorrect fail
This. It depends on the kid. Ours couldn't be laid down anywhere else while awake without screaming for a long time. And we also need a new one cuz the motor pooped out!

  • I agree that it is definitely something that you should get secondhand or borrowed.  That said, we borrowed the one that we have, and our son loved it and fell asleep in it quite well.  We used it a fair bit for the first 4-6 months and then never again.  We did not have any difficulties transitioning between the swing and the crib/pack'n'play and could use each of them pretty much interchangeably for naps, but our son is a very easy baby.  I'd put it in the category of nice to have but not truly necessary.

  • We don't have one.  We had one with my oldest and very rarely used it so ditched it for #2.  We have a simple bouncer seat for a place to put baby down that's portable.  Otherwise, we just wear baby.  If space/price is a concern, look into the small "travel" swings.
  • My DS loved his. Totally saved my sanity and gave me back the use of my hands. The swing was my favorite baby gift.

  • My LOs both loved the swing. At times it was a real lifesaver for us when I couldn't get them to sleep/nap. So for us it's a definite must-have! We have a FP cradle swing that goes both side to side and back and forth.

  • My LO hated the bouncy seat for some reason but loved the swing.  He didn't really ever sleep in it past about 4 weeks, but it was a great place until he was almost a year for him to chill out and have some quiet time.

  • It depends on the baby. I didn't buy one for DD but ended up borrowing one from a friend because it was the only way she would sleep for the first 6 months. My friend, who I borrowed the swing from, her baby hated it.

  • DD would only sleep with/on me or in her swing. So for me it was an absolute necessity. Just depends on the baby.
  • Ours was most necessary! It was used often for at least 3 months. Each baby is different, but the swing was a huge blessing in our house.

  • Ours gave us a break! We used it up until she was too big for it.
  • My cousin gave me hers today actually, it was like new and she refused to let me pay her for it, and its a really nice one. If I had to buy myself or expect someone to buy for me I would go a little more basic.

  • My little girl LOVED her and shes almost 9 months and still uses it. I just told my husband, I dont know what we are going to do when she outgrows it. Shes only 18 pounds so we have some time but it will be a sad day especially when he uses it and she loves it so much!

  • Yes! Oh god yes. DS loved it. We got ours second hand, retail they are truly outrageous. If possible, try to get one that plugs into the wall (although more expensive). Our takes 4 D batteries, I swear we spent about $400 on batteries for that damn thing.
