June 2014 Moms

Swings, Rockers, and Bouncers- oh my!

I heard about swings, rockers, bouncers, Mamaroos, etc. I have lots of questions for all of you STMs!

1. I have heard that some children prefer one, and some prefer others- what do you recommend? What are the big differences?

2. Are there any other movable contraptions that I am forgetting to mention?!

3. What features on these products should I look for that you've had luck with?

4. What combination will you be buying? Which products would you say "Definitely do NOT buy used!"?

Any guidance would be appreciated!

  • Yeah, I want one moving seat device but am lost in choosing one.

  • I think a lot of these questions have been answered in the post which is two down from yours, but I'll bite and answer this one. 1) Yes, moms will tell you that they couldn't live without their swing/bouncer and others will tell you their kid hated it. We had a swing and bouncer and DD liked both. I think to see the differences of all of them you really need to check out BRU online or go to a baby store to see them first hand. 2) No, that's about it for contraptions. 3) A/C adapters are good unless you want to replace batteries constantly. And non-annoying music on the item is also good to check out. 3) I think they are all fine to buy used. I think it depends on preference, again. Some moms will say that they will only buy brand new, others will only buy used, or borrow from friends. We already have a bouncer from DD but our swing broke, so we'll be getting a new one before #2 comes. HTH, good luck.

  • I'm a FTM so we have decided to take our chances with a swing and also the Rock N Play.  The Rock N Play was non-negotiable for us.

  • We'll be buying a new swing and using the rock n play we already have.

It really depends on the baby. Some like nothing but to be held. ;)

  • DD loved her swing but we never had a bouncer for her. This time we're getting each twin a swing and bouncer. Overkill I know but I'm paranoid about managing them plus DD and I need all the options I can get.

  • Graco® DuetSoothe™ Swing + Rocker in Cascade is a swing and bouncer seat in one. The bouncer seat detaches. My SIL also recommends that the swing moves forward and back and side to side. Your baby may have a preference. I registered for this at Buy Buy Baby. It's 179.99 and gets good reviews. :)

  • We will have a simple bouncer and that's it.  Although I have a big collection of baby carriers…you should definitely invest in a quality carrier and a $10 exercise ball :)
  • We had a swing and a bouncer with DS and used both.  Of the 2, the bouncer was probably the most useful because it was mobile. I put it in the bathroom everyday so he had a safe place to hang while I got ready/showered, etc. (unless I waited until he napped to shower), moved it upstairs when putting away laundry, took it with us when we visited friends, etc.

Our son loved the swing too and he liked the side to side motion better than front to back (not all swings go both ways).  I got both used, though and am very glad I did as in the scheme of things the number of months you are able to use them is pretty short.

  • Swing and rock n play are our two most-used items. Our swing plays music, which DS likes.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • First time around we had a swing (one that we borrowed) a RNP and bouncer. The swing got about a month of use in our house. LO just didn't care for it and it took up a ton of room. We loved the RNP. We used it as a bassinet in our room. My favorite feature was that DH would let me sleep in and could just pick the RNP up and bring the baby out of the room. It was pretty decent for travel as well when she was small. Bouncer got a decent amount of use and wasn't too $ so it was worth it to us.
  • @kaceymarie do you know what the major differences are between the mamaroo and rockaroo are?

I watched both videos and they seem similar... I would only buy one, just wondering which is worth the splurge, KWIM?
