Hernia?

So we found out Ozzy has a hernia.  They're giving us a referral to Seattle Children's to have it surgically repaired.  My daughter also had one when she was born, but it corrected itself.  I understand that it's a very common preemie thing.  My question, have any of you had infants who had to have their hernias surgically repaired as infants?  Ozzy turned 10 weeks yesterday.  I've been reading a little online about it.  Sounds like if he were older it would be a same day surgery, but since he's a baby it sounds like he'll be kept over night for observation.  Just wondering what to expect before, during, and after!  :)

Re: Hernia?

  • My 7 week old has a hernia too. They say it will correct itself by a year old. They dont do surgery till 4 years old. Why are they so set on doing the surgery if it will eventually correct itself? Sorry im not much help, but curious too.

  • Nola has an umbilical hernia and her doctor said they wouldn't talk about correcting until 4yrs. I'm guessing they want to do it based on the severity? Good luck. Positive thoughts for an uneventful procedure!

  • If it's an inguinal (groin) hernia, they don't go away, whereas umbilical hernias can go away by preschool age.
  • What @bjhafner04 said. His is an inguinal hernia. It's pretty painful for him.

Absolutely an inguinal hernia needs to be addressed for baby's comfort. Hopefully it'll be quick and he'll soon be on the mend.

  • My baby has an umbilical hernia. They said that won't correct until age five since most resolve on their own.

  • Sounds like umbilical hernias are pretty common :)

Wish little man had it so easy. We gave him a dose of Tylenol last night and tonight before bed. Seems to keep him a little calmer.

  • I can't tell you what to expect, but I can say that I had a hernia corrected as an infant/toddler and I'm all good now :-)

Good luck! Wishing your LO a quick recovery!

  • We do sameday surgery for inguinal hernias at the place where I work. If it's just the hernia alone it's very quick procedure. A lot of times it will also cause little boys to have an undecended testicle as well, which would be fixed during surgery.

Undescended testicles only happen a small percentage of the time, not super common. Usually the recovery is also quick, kids are extremely resilient. I'm a general surgeon and have fixed several, we just give kids infant Tylenol afterwards and they do very well! Stitches are usually under the skin so nothing really to take care of there. As parents we are usually traumatized more than the kids, but they do very well!
  • Okay. Sounds pretty simple then! Thank you, ladies, for making me feel better!
